Winners were announced on Oct. 27 at the Associated Collegiate Press\\College Media Association Fall National College Media Convention in Louisville, Kentucky.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seven literary arts magazines were awarded Pacemakers this year. In total, 104 magazines were submitted in the feature\/general interest and literary arts divisions. Submissions were produced by four-year and two-year college students during the 2017-18 year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AXIS<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s first Pacemaker. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miambiance<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last won a Pacemaker 28 years ago. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[The Pacemaker] adds credibility that shows <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miambiance<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as being one of the greatest college publications in the nation,\u201d said Marcos Tzvetanov, who served as editor-in-chief for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miambiance<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Momo Manalang, editor-in-chief of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AXIS<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> magazine last year, believes that her publication stood out among others because it \u201crepresents what kind of students go to MDC and celebrates our diversity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14771\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14771\" style=\"width: 232px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14771\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/AXIS2-232x300.jpg\" alt=\"Front cover for AXIS.\" width=\"232\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/AXIS2-232x300.jpg 232w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/AXIS2-768x991.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/AXIS2-793x1024.jpg 793w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/AXIS2.jpg 1097w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 232px) 100vw, 232px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14771\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">COVER COURTESY OF AXIS MAGAZINE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AXIS<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> holds the award in high regard but are most proud of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/search\/?q=%22AXIS%22&amp;_siq_page=1&amp;_siq_sort=relevance\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">the publication serving as a platform for North Campus students to express their creativity<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a way for the students to connect with other writing, fine arts, design and music students and be part of a community on campus,\u201d Kathleen Noonan, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AXIS<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> magazine\u2019s co-adviser said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both magazines were also awarded the Pinnacle Awards in the two-year literary arts magazine category by the College Media Association in Louisville, Kentucky. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe students see it as a way to showcase their work, their art,\u201d said <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miambiance<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> co-adviser Rita Fernandez-Sterling. \u201cThe fact that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miambiance<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is exclusive to our campus and our students are proud of the magazine, that\u2019s the beauty of it.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AXIS <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a finalist<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for a Crown Award in the college print magazine category, awarded by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.
