Three authors at this year\u2019s Miami Book Fair<\/span><\/a> will have a home-field advantage. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Miami Dade College alumnus <\/span>Dariel Suarez, <\/b>West Campus professor <\/span>Steve Kronen<\/b> and retired professor <\/span>Geoffrey Philp <\/b>will all be featured, in various ways, at the College\u2019s signature literary event. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are their stories: <\/span><\/p>\n

Philp will moderate \u201cReading Jamaica\u201d on <\/span>Nov. 17 at 5:30 p.m. in Room 8301.<\/b><\/p>\n

The panel features authors that have written extensively about the country in their work. They will explore themes such as racial identity, gender and sexuality, family and alienation and the rich diversity of Jamaican culture. <\/span><\/p>\n

For Philp, who wrote <\/span>Garvey\u2019s Ghost, <\/span><\/i>a book on Jamaican political activist Marcus Garvey, the event is personal. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been reading their work and enjoying their work,\u201d Philp said. \u201cThere were similar themes to my work in some ways, especially in my last novel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The event also marks a homecoming for Philp. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He started at the College as a student in 1979, transitioning into a paraprofessional, instructor, professor, department chairperson and then back to the role of professor. Philp, 60, retired last year as an English professor at the North and InterAmerican Campuses and is currently working on a graphic novel based on Garvey.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Book Fair has been a tremendous help to me,\u201d Philp said. \u201cEvery book I\u2019ve ever published, I\u2019ve brought to the Book Fair.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Through this event, Philp hopes to incorporate his teaching techniques into his discussion with the authors, aiming to have his audience learn more about Jamaica through fiction.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the joys of teaching for as long as I did at MDC was opening my students\u2019 eyes to new things,\u201d Philp said. \u201cI\u2019m hoping I\u2019ll have a similar experience when I introduce these authors at the Book Fair.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Suarez will read excerpts from his award-winning short story collection, <\/span>A Kind of Solitude, <\/span><\/i>during \u201cShort Stories: A Reading\u201d on <\/span>Nov. 17 at 12:30 p.m. in Room 1365. <\/b>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The collection, set in Cuba, provides audiences with a new perspective of the country.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI used to blog about the Book Fair,\u201d said Suarez, who was born in Cuba. \u201cI remember being inspired by seeing a lot of Latino authors, so being able to read there now with my first book coming out is kind of surreal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Suarez, who currently lives in Boston, got involved with the Book Fair by reaching out to the coordinators in June and describing his story, including his love for the event while he lived in Miami. Soon after, he was included.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really exciting,\u201d Suarez said. \u201cI\u2019m hoping it\u2019ll be a bit of a coming home celebration.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

His return to MDC adds extra significance to his trip. Suarez, who graduated from MDC in 2008 with a focus in creative writing, believes his love for writing started through the classes he took at the College.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a really crucial moment for me. I was younger and I wasn\u2019t really sure if I could be a writer,\u201d Suarez said. \u201c[The classes] allowed me to fall in love with the craft.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

West Campus librarian Steve Kronen is presenting his poetry collection, <\/span>Homage to Mistress Oppenheimer, <\/span><\/i>at the \u201cPoetry is Alive and Well in Florida\u201d event on <\/span>Nov. 17 at 1:30 p.m. in Room 6100.<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to make sure I had an opportunity to read my new book,\u201d Kronen said. \u201cMDC is doing a great thing, hosting the Book Fair all these years.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Kronen\u2019s book, which the Book Fair describes as exploring the \u201cspaces between science and God, between the apocalyptic and the everyday\u201d is part of a four-author panel exploring how poetry is still vibrant in Miami.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI hope it promotes poetry,\u201d Kronen said. \u201cI hope, like I guess any other writer does, that they like my work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

With a poem collection dealing with issues beyond the surface-level, Kronen hopes that audiences can look beyond the current disputes and seek refuge in literature.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis country is at a tipping point. We\u2019ve seen under [President Donald J.] Trump a greater and greater tendency towards authoritarianism,\u201d Kronen said. \u201cIt\u2019s all of our responsibility to make sure that doesn\u2019t happen here. Literature can help us do that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Through his presentation, Kronen aims to bring that hope home.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s all very familiar and comfortable,\u201d Kronen said. \u201cIt feels very homeish.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
