Refresh: Mumford & Sons’ fourth album, Delta, is the culmination of all of the band’s previous efforts\u2014the good and the bad.

Even as one of the most successful bands of the past decade, it\u2019s hard for people to understand Mumford & Sons<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The most prominent group to arise out of the New Americana wave of 2012, the group has managed to slither its way through a variety of music styles (the one-two punch in <\/span>Sigh No More <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>Babel, <\/span><\/i>the electronic reset in 2015\u2019s <\/span>Wilder Mind <\/span><\/i>and their swing into South Africa in their EP <\/span>Johannesburg)<\/span><\/i>. However, with their fourth album <\/span>Delta, <\/span><\/i>they\u2019ve managed to achieve their prime\u2014the good and bad combined.<\/span><\/p>\n

Delta <\/span><\/i>is an album about love, first and foremost. The first track, <\/span>42, <\/span><\/i>leads with the speculative\u2014 \u201cwhat if I need you \/ in my darkest hour?\u201d That segues into multiple odes to the emotion, with songs like <\/span>Beloved <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>Slip Away <\/span><\/i>speaking to a lover while others like <\/span>Guiding Light <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>Picture You <\/span><\/i>proclaiming the necessity of that love.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s also what\u2019s felt throughout the album, which truly feels like the band\u2019s definitive. The production is higher than any of the group\u2019s previous efforts\u2014courtesy of Paul Epworth, the Grammy-winning producer responsible for Adele\u2019s <\/span>21 <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>25<\/span><\/i>\u2014with the lyrics (consistently the best part of any Mumford album) matching the maturity of the sound. <\/span>Delta <\/span><\/i>is an album of care, and its contents reflect that.<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s not to claim total perfection. Some songs feel overproduced, with <\/span>42 <\/span><\/i>in particular feels much larger than the band\u2019s live performances of the track. In songs like <\/span>If I Say <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>Forever, <\/span><\/i>two other songs Mumford played live before their official incarnations, studio sessions seemed to have done disservices to their prior versions, leaving them as past versions of their better selves (even if the lyrics are still superb).<\/span><\/p>\n

But then lies the final, and title, track, <\/span>Delta. <\/span><\/i>The six-minute song, clocking in as Mumford\u2019s longest, incorporates distinct elements from past tracks into its length, making it the culmination of the band\u2019s journey toward their fourth record. In an explosion not dissimilar to <\/span>Sigh No More\u2019<\/span><\/i>s <\/span>Dust Bowl Dance, <\/span><\/i>the song guides the listener through the journeys of their debut, through their Grammy wins before venturing into the electric yet soulful vibe of their third album and extended play. It closes itself off in a fade, leaving the listener eager for more.<\/span><\/p>\n

More isn\u2019t what\u2019s needed with <\/span>Delta <\/span><\/i>the album, which showcases an improvement in the band and their understanding of what their opportunities are. What <\/span>Wilder Mind <\/span><\/i>lacked in coherence is made up for tenfold in its follow-up\u2014almost to a fault, with some songs directly (and somewhat forcibly) referencing the one that follows them (\u201cI need that guiding light\u201d in <\/span>42 <\/span><\/i>leading into <\/span>Guiding Light; <\/span><\/i>\u201cI can see the wild has come for you\u201d in <\/span>Beloved <\/span><\/i>leading into <\/span>The Wild). <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

But that reckoning shows that Mumford & Sons has finally begun to understand what it is as a band and what sound they want to produce. In <\/span>Delta, <\/span><\/i>they\u2019ve finally become their own\u2014now it\u2019s time for people to understand that.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
