{"id":14877,"date":"2018-11-16T14:08:43","date_gmt":"2018-11-16T19:08:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=14877"},"modified":"2020-07-13T13:17:28","modified_gmt":"2020-07-13T17:17:28","slug":"slasher-movies-are-back-in-style","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/slasher-movies-are-back-in-style\/","title":{"rendered":"Slasher Movies Are Back In Style"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the early 70s\u2019, the slasher genre has been slicing up the big screens and delivering blood-soaked screams to audiences across the world. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its brand of horror has kept viewers entranced since its inception with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Bay of Blood <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 1971, labeled one of its pioneers. This category of film is characterized by a few certain traits \u2014 usually involving a killer stalking and preying upon our main characters when an anniversary of some traumatic event comes around, usually facing a \u201cfinal girl\u201d in the last act of the movie and overall has a focus on the killer throughout the series rather than the survivors. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moviegoers have seen numerous famous villains grace the screen such as the lifeless Michael Myers, the hockey mask-toting Jason Voorhees, the chainsaw-wielding Leatherface and the nightmare-inducing Freddy Krueger. But what have these franchises done lately? Let\u2019s look at the status of these slashers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lately, the genre has been going through a mix of shakeups and return to forms. Recent successes have changed the traditional format of the genre. Whether it be a sexually transmitted \u00a0killer ghost or a deadly blind man, films like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It Follows<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2014) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/dont-breathe-leaves-viewers-asphyxiated-something\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t Breathe<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2015) both brought some new life by offering fresh ideas. This trend continues with the sequels for two popular 2017 films that broke the box office at the time, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IT: Chapter Two <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Happy Death Day 2U, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">both set for 2019. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, you can\u2019t forget the classics. The recent redux of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Halloween<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is more than enough proof that the conventional slasher format is alive and well. Making more than $150 million in less than a month, the film already has sequel talks in progress. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the obvious success of the film, it unsurprisingly revives another dead franchise from its grave \u2014 a new <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Friday the 13<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> film is reportedly being co-produced by Springhill Entertainment, Lebron James\u2019 production company, and Vertigo Entertainment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But why are these films so popular in the first place? Kurtis Smejkal, host of the Three Angry Nerds podcast and self-proclaimed \u201cBiggest Friday the 13<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Fan,\u201d has a few thoughts on the matter. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMany of the best slashers give a compelling backstory for their villains. Jason is the victim of abuse, Freddy is the son of a psychopath, and so on,\u201d Smejkal said. \u201cMany of these villains have roots in real fears and anxieties we all face and seeing someone overcome those is cathartic, even if it means killing teens to do so.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2018 has been stacked with new additions to the genre like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hell Fest<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the sequel to 2008\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Strangers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Strangers: Prey at Night. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite varying scores and some not-so-nice reviews, it is without a doubt progress that\u2019s being made to always push the envelope with new ideas and continuing to embrace the legacy of the classics that started the craze back in the day. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No matter how badly we want to cover our eyes and turn the television off, there&#8217;s just that feeling that renders us helpless, watching our screens turn red and a killer chase after our hero is just what we need to get our hearts racing and feel more alive than ever. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ethan Toth is co-host of <a href=\"https:\/\/threeangrynerds.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Three Angry Nerds podcast<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since the early 70s\u2019, the slasher genre has been slicing up the big screens and delivering blood-soaked screams to audiences across the world.
