For the past 26 years, Alejandro R<\/span>\u00ed<\/span>o<\/span>s has fueled his coworkers\u2019 days with a fresh batch of Cuban coffee.<\/span><\/p>\n

R<\/span>\u00ed<\/span>os, who is a Hispanic media specialist at Miami Dade College, will soon pour his last cafecito when he retires from the College after nearly three decades. <\/span><\/p>\n

His last day in the office will be Dec. 21. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t wait till an age when you might be sitting at home because of physical circumstances,\u201d R<\/span>\u00ed<\/span>o<\/span>s said. \u201cI have no plans to slow down now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

R<\/span>\u00ed<\/span>o<\/span>s, 66, was born in Cuba in 1952, shortly before Fidel Castro began his communist takeover of the country. His family brought him to the United States when he was five, where he attended Mae M. Walters Elementary School in Hialeah. However, after relations between the U.S. and Cuba fizzled in 1962, his family returned to Cuba. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA big mistake,\u201d R<\/span>\u00ed<\/span>o<\/span>s said. \u201cWe never talked about it, but it was a big mistake and they knew it was a mistake.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

While in Cuba, <\/span>R\u00edos<\/span> made it his mission to educate himself. His intelligence allowed him to skip several grades and he credits his teachers for reteaching him the basics of Spanish, a language he lost during his time in Miami. He eventually earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in art from the University of Havana and married his wife, Esther. But he remained focused on returning to the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe hated [the political state] of Cuba and we wanted to get out of there,\u201d <\/span>R\u00edos<\/span> said. \u201cIt was a terrible place to be.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But that goal wasn\u2019t easy to achieve. <\/span>R\u00edos<\/span> missed the Mariel boatlift in 1980, a mass migration of Cubans to the U.S., and couldn\u2019t find another way to return to the country. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t happy,\u201d <\/span>R\u00edos<\/span> said. \u201cI had to come back. I didn\u2019t know how, but I knew I had to come back\u2014it was my goal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Thirty years later, his opportunity finally came. In 1992, <\/span>R\u00edos<\/span> received an academic invitation to come to Mexico. His wife, Esther, joined him shortly after and after three months they made their way toward the southern border where they were granted political asylum. <\/span><\/p>\n

But where would <\/span>R\u00edos<\/span>, then 40, work? Because of his experience with book fairs in Cuba and the Cuban Ministry of Culture, he was told to reach out to Marta Franchi, who worked at CAMACOL, the Latin Chamber of Commerce in the United States. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Franchi made a fateful phone call on his behalf. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018I\u2019m going to call a friend of mine, Eduardo,\u2019\u201d <\/span>R\u00edos<\/span> recalled Franchi saying. \u201cShe didn\u2019t say Dr. Padr\u00f3n.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Padr\u00f3n, then president of Wolfson Campus<\/span><\/a>, offered R<\/span>\u00ed<\/span>o<\/span>s a part-time job writing in Spanish for the College\u2019s media relations department. After five years, the job became full-time. He\u2019s been a fixture there ever since. His biggest achievement, he says, is establishing a network among Hispanic media for the College. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI owe a lot of who I am here in the United States to Miami Dade College,\u201d <\/span>R\u00edos<\/span> said. \u201cI believe in being lucky\u2014or not\u2014and I believe I was lucky to end up here at Miami Dade College.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Juan Mendieta, MDC\u2019s director of communications, said <\/span>R\u00edos\u2019 <\/span>retirement will leave a void that will be hard to fill because of his unique skill set. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s somebody who knows the oral and written communications better than most but also [has] a deep knowledge on film, books, the art, the arts in general,\u201d Mendieta said. \u201cHe is a renaissance man.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He spreads his appreciation for culture throughout the entire media relations department, where <\/span>R\u00edos<\/span> is known for having lengthy discussions about film, art and his love for the Beatles.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe was a great coworker, a great writer and a fantastic, fantastic human being,\u201d said <\/span>R\u00edos<\/span>\u2019 boss, Hessy Fernandez, the director of media relations at MDC.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to his time at MDC, <\/span>R\u00edos<\/span> is well known for his work outside of the College. Last year, <\/span>R\u00edos<\/span> published <\/span>La Mirada Indiscreta<\/span><\/a>, <\/span><\/i>a compilation of columns written for <\/span>El Nuevo Herald <\/span><\/i>that focus on topics such as his life, background and film. He also previously hosted <\/span>Pantalla TVM, <\/span><\/i>a series delving into Cuban movies.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s that love of film that <\/span>R\u00edos <\/span>hopes to indulge in during his retirement (along with spending time with his family\u2014his wife, two sons and two grandchildren). He currently hosts the program <\/span>La Mirada Indiscreta (<\/span><\/i>which shares the same name as his book<\/span>). <\/span><\/i>The<\/span> show focuses on Cuban cinema and airs on the Spanish channel <\/span>Am\u00e9rica TeV\u00e9; he also plans to continue writing articles for <\/span>El Nuevo Herald<\/span><\/i>, pushing his love for culture forward. <\/span><\/p>\n
