{"id":15239,"date":"2019-01-24T13:43:41","date_gmt":"2019-01-24T18:43:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=15239"},"modified":"2020-07-07T16:00:23","modified_gmt":"2020-07-07T20:00:23","slug":"golden-globes-set-the-stage-for-the-oscars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/golden-globes-set-the-stage-for-the-oscars\/","title":{"rendered":"Golden Globes Set the Stage For The Oscars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hollywood Foreign Press Association hosted the 76th Golden Globes on Jan. 6, continuing their trend of being the first major awards show broadcast\u2014and of bucking the common predictions for who will win their respective Oscar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a night full of surprises, the HFPA awarded their major awards to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bohemian Rhapsody <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Motion Picture\u2014Drama) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green Book <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Motion Picture\u2014Musical or Comedy), two films that weren\u2019t necessarily expected to win awards yet may have solidified their case come Academy Award nominations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the case of the former, the win shocked most Hollywood film observers. While <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bohemian Rhapsody <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">became a commercial sensation (the film currently stands at $751.9 million worldwide), it received a paltry 62 percent on critic aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, making its coronation of the HFPA\u2019s version of Best Picture questionable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also doesn\u2019t bode well for the season\u2019s other musical offering, the Lady Gaga-vehicle <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Star is Born. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The film was expected to sweep its major categories, having garnered the second-most nominations after <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vice, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yet only won one\u2014Best Original Song. With <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rhapsody\u2019s <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">win potentially securing it a Best Picture nomination (not uncommon for critically-subdued films that perform well at the Box Office), it raises the possibility of the two splitting votes, robbing Bradley Cooper\u2019s directorial debut of its frontrunner status.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That same status applied to Gaga herself up until the Globes, where she lost in a surprise upset to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wife\u2019s <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glenn Close for Best Actress in a Motion Picture. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The latter had received universal acclaim for her role in the film since its debut at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival, though many doubted her chances once Gaga\u2019s performance landed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So by awarding Close the Globe, it begs the question of whether the singer\u2019s star power can carry her over the finish line for the ultimate acting achievement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green Book, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the film managed to defy the odds. While having earned a number of nominations, the film\u2019s subdued box office performance and an \u201cn-word\u201d controversy by star Viggo Mortenson led many to believe the film had relinquished its hopes of winning any award gold. But led by wins for Best Motion Picture\u2014Musical or Comedy and star Mahershala Ali\u2019s acting win, the film managed to regain credibility amongst voters\u2014and raised its own prospects of future award wins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s hard to know for certain at this stage what will win come late February.
