Koubek in 1929 and donated to Miami Dade College by the University of Miami in 2011, she calls out every element of the space, noting its history while comparing it to its current use as a venue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Garcia is the executive director of MDC Live Arts, a \u201ccultural presenter\u201d that showcases artists throughout different venues in Miami. She joined the group in 2012 after eight years as the director of programming at the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adrienne<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arsht Center, continuing her goal of promoting art through different mediums.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m constantly looking for the next great thing,\u201d Garcia said. \u201cI\u2019m constantly looking for that next great shared experience that can be shared here in Miami.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s what art is to her and Live Arts\u2014a shared experience. The group, which is based at the Freedom Tower, courts and scouts underground artists that offer a new perspective in their genre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s something pushed in their current season, which focuses on women, immigrants and innovators\u2014all social points of the current political landscape. Besides <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Niyaz: The Fourth Light, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which was a tribute to the first female Sufi mystic and poet, the season will feature performances like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\/PEH-LO-TAH\/,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which deals with urban commentary on soccer, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Combat Hippies: AMAL, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which tackles the effects of war on people of color.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their 2017-2018 theme, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ojal\u00e1\/Inshallah: Wishes from the Muslim World, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">captured contemporary Muslim art and showcased it at venues like downtown\u2019s Olympia Theater, the North Beach Bandshell and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/search\/?q=%22mdc%20live%20arts%20lab%22&amp;_siq_page=1&amp;_siq_sort=relevance\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">MDC Live Arts Lab<\/span><\/a> at Wolfson Campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s the latter that represents another element of Live Arts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lab does more than provide space for local artists to present their work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It doubles as a studio and a venue that allows six local artists to create and expand their body in preparation for performances, entitled the Live Arts Lab Alliance (LALA).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Live Arts also has a faculty task force, where MDC professors bring the themes from the current season\u2019s performances into their lessons and the artists themselves come to various MDC campuses to engage directly with students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat\u2019s probably one of the things the artists comment on most,\u201d Garcia said. \u201cHow much they enjoy speaking to the students, how much they enjoy working with them and how impressed they are by them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Omar Figueras, an English and literature professor at InterAmerican Campus and member of the task force, understands the need to expand these cultural offerings to students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI want them to be open to other things,\u201d said Figueras, who at the time of the interview was leading students to a discussion on feminism in the Middle East in support of the performance of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Niyaz <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on Feb. 21. \u201cI really think performing arts is as important as literature.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s that intersection that Garcia wants students, and the community at large, to appreciate. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLearning happens at any age,\u201d Garcia said. \u201cWe see that whether it\u2019s an MDC student or a member of the community who\u2019s coming out to our performances\u2014people are going to be able to learn something new. They\u2019re going to be able to celebrate something new or something that\u2019s their own.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while MDC Live Arts doesn\u2019t deal directly with students, it\u2019s part of Garcia\u2019s mission to make sure they are part of the primary audience. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students have the opportunity to become ambassadors for the program in order to expand its voice across all eight campuses. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tickets to all performances are also free for all MDC students. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe don\u2019t have students of our own, we don\u2019t teach classes,\u201d Garcia said. \u201cWhen students do take a chance to go out and see something they don\u2019t really know what it is and they love it, that\u2019s really inspiring for us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kathryn Garcia has a glow in her eyes when discussing the Koubek Center.
