In the case of classic movie director Stanley Donen, he was a man whose talents flew under the radar for years, only being appreciated after his death. When he passed away on Feb. 21, the movie world not only mourned the loss of a great artist, but his death also made people question: what was the film that defined Donen\u2019s career?<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15672\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15672\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15672\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/donen.jpeg\" alt=\"Headshot of Stanley Donen.\" width=\"300\" height=\"358\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/donen.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/donen-251x300.jpeg 251w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15672\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">DONEN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Born on April 13, 1924, Donen rose to fame directing some of the most memorable films in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/search\/?q=%22hollywood%22&amp;_siq_page=1&amp;_siq_sort=relevance\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Hollywood<\/span><\/a> history. With a flair for the dramatic due to his background in Broadway, Donen made his directorial debut with 1949\u2019s nautical-themed musical comedy <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On The Town, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">starring actor Gene Kelly. From that point on, Donen\u2019s talents as a director were well-known with actors, actresses and directors alike. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donen had the special ability to turn screenplays into magic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It didn\u2019t matter the genre, he managed to turn the most mundane scripts into masterpieces. His standout films range from musical comedies like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seven Brides for Seven Brothers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Royal Wedding<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take Me Out to The Ball Game<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to more somber, serious films that still manage to have musical elements like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Funny Face<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the melodrama <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two For The Road<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0and the mystery-thriller <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charade<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But perhaps the most important and defining film of Donen\u2019s career, and what probably holds the crown as his signature work, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0045152\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Singin\u2019 in the Rain<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Released in 1952, and often regarded as the best musical movie of all time, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Singin\u2019 in the Rain <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the quintessential movie musical; filled with angst, comedy and intricate dance numbers, Donen\u2019s technicolor masterpiece was one of a kind upon its release. Telling the story of silent movies and their transition to talking films, also known colloquially as \u201ctalkies,\u201d <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Singin\u2019 in the Rain<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gives viewers a look behind the scenes of the movie business. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With an all-star cast that included the likes of Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O\u2019Connor, Donen\u2019s unique directing ability was able to take what could\u2019ve been another dull musical about the hardships of acting and turned it into a film that has been remembered for decades. With <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Singin\u2019 in the Rain<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Donen demonstrated how to delicately balance the heavy emotions of the cutthroat world of show business and the lighthearted dance numbers that were weaved throughout the picture. These two elements perfectly described Donen\u2019s directing style: neatly constructed storylines that have just the right amount of drama and comedy, with one genre never overpowering the other. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The majority of Donen\u2019s movies were similar to this but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Singin\u2019 in the Rain<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the best example of his way of making a film. For Donen, it did not matter what the subject matter was, as long as it had an interesting storyline that could be made into something the audience wasn\u2019t expecting.
