There are awards for Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Drama, Best Documentary, and Best Technical Achievement, as well as a $500 cash prize. Seven of the 11 films nominated are directed by MDC Film Students, and I had the chance to speak to all of them about their experiences shooting, writing, and directing these films.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>\u00a0<em>BEIJOS VERMELHOS<\/em> &#8211; Directed by Patricia Joaquim and Karina Rey<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28493\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28493\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-28493\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/BeijosVermehlos.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/BeijosVermehlos.jpg 959w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/BeijosVermehlos-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/BeijosVermehlos-768x402.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/BeijosVermehlos-390x205.jpg 390w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28493\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PHOTO COURTESY OF MIAMI INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beijos Vermelhos<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is about a student who becomes infatuated with her art professor and haunts him in order to try and get him to love her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Directors Patricia Joaquim and Karina Rey made this suspense film for their Film Production 3 class, and it was done in four hours at the Lehman Theater on North Campus and edited in a day. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Rey and Joaquim, it was their first time writing and filming a suspense film. With the challenge of such little time to film, it was a stressful, yet fun environment for the pair. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The leads are their theatre director, Andy Quiroga and musical theater student Cassandra Medina. As for what they hope to win at CinemaSlam, Rey says she and Joaquim are simply honored to see their film at the festival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cIf we were to win any award at all it would be the cherry on top of a sundae. The film shows the work of Miami based non-profit organization, The House of Healing. This organization helps children with autism, aspergers, and cerebral palsy in an inclusive environment where they are encouraged to participate in the expressive arts, such as painting and music. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Filming <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jojo <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Finding Hope At The House Of Healing<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> brought a lot of limitations to director Carlos Andres Cuervo, for it had to be shot in one day with one camera, focusing mainly on one character and storyline. All of it took around two weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project is a collaboration with Jonathan and Michael Cuartas (also MDC students), Jonathan is one of the producers, and Michael was the director of photography.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuervo feels thankful for the experience saying, \u201cWe were more than blessed to find such a wonderful organization in Miami, doing so much good in our local community. We found that Annie (Jojo&#8217;s mother) and her family were the right fit for our story, they really carried everything and all the credit really goes to them and their help in trusting their pains, hopes and happiness with me and the Cuartas brothers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI believe that as filmmakers we have an intrinsic social responsibility to give back to our community. We have the ability to help people cope with sorrow, fear and desperation as well as to celebrate joy, hope and faith,\u201d this is what Cuervo believes makes this film special, for it shows the good in our community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When asked what they hope to win at CinemaSlam, Cuervo says they\u2019ve already won by having the privilege to share this story and receive the audience\u2019s feedback. He welcomes awards as a way to raise more awareness on the subject.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI would love to win on the documentary category and also the audience award. My hope is that the audience attending the festival will love the story and be touched by it as much as I was while making the film,\u201d Cuervo said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuervo\u2019s next project is another documentary, this one focused on the construction of a new school in Nicaragua, founded by a non-profit organization in Miami. An experimental film of his is also in the works, a vision of Miami through dance, meant to highlight the various cultures and dance styles found in our city.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><b> \u00a0<em>LOBOTOMY<\/em> &#8211; Directed by Zachary Burgh and Carolina Maldonado<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28494\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28494\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-28494\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Lobotomy.jpg\" alt=\"Cinemaslam\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Lobotomy.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Lobotomy-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Lobotomy-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28494\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PHOTO COURTESY OF MIAMI INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This suspense\/thriller is about a man named Donald Summers, who is a candidate for a lobotomy at Mayfield Mental Facility. He attempts an escape to avoid being the first test subject to the procedure, which is the new method of curing mental illness at the facility. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Directors Zachary Burgh and Carolina Maldonado had a pleasant time while filming. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe had to work the clock with 4 hours, so we worked quickly and efficiently,\u201d Burgh said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burgh believes the film is special, for it is \u201csuch a rollercoaster from the very start\u2026the whole story connects with you.\u201d They hope to take the awards for best actor and\/or best director. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pair\u2019s next project will be in collaboration with MBF Pictures and 42ents on a film titled, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alejandro<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Burgh calls it \u201ca story a lot of people will be able to relate to.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><b> \u00a0<em>SUNDAYS ARE THE WORST<\/em> &#8211; Directed by Melissa Gomez<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28495\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28495\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-28495\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Sundays-Are-The-Worst.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Sundays-Are-The-Worst.jpg 720w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Sundays-Are-The-Worst-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28495\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PHOTO COURTESY OF MIAMI INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sundays Are the Worst<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is about a girl in her early twenties who finds out her dad is about to be released from prison. She then must decide whether or not she will go pick him up the following Sunday. She is recounting what she went through every day of the week before that Sunday. This coming-of-age story has elements of comedy and drama. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Director Melissa Gomez, a recent graduate from MDC&#8217;s Film, Television and Digital B.A.S. program, made a year-long commitment beginning in March of 2013 and completing the project for her workshop class in December of 2014. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was exhilarating to shoot something that you write in your room for like six to seven hours on end for a couple of weeks, and then once you\u2019re on set, it\u2019s actually happening; people are actually following your orders,\u201d Gomez said. \u201c It was a lot of fun, but it was definitely one of the harder projects I\u2019ve been involved in, because there was so much responsibility involved.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The film was based on Gomez\u2019s experience with her father, and she wanted it to be as accurate as possible. \u201cI wrote this story knowing what happens after he got released and wanting to go back and say goodbye to that chapter of my life,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The film\u2019s shooting locations included Wynwood\u2019s O Cinema, where Gomez is the manager.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was basically our playground,\u201c Gomez said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gomez doesn\u2019t expect to win much at CinemaSlam, \u201cI\u2019m kind of just going to be happy to be included, especially when it\u2019s me and my fellow classmates.\u201d She hopes her lead actress can win recognition for her performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the future, Gomez hopes to direct a comedy and write some more, but for now she is focused on running a movie theatre 24\/7.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><b> \u00a0<em>THE FIRST DAY (EL PRIMER DIA)<\/em> &#8211; Rita Pereyra<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28498\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28498\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-28498\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/The-First-Day_-El-Primer-Dia-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Cinemaslam\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/The-First-Day_-El-Primer-Dia-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/The-First-Day_-El-Primer-Dia-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/The-First-Day_-El-Primer-Dia-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/The-First-Day_-El-Primer-Dia-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/The-First-Day_-El-Primer-Dia.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28498\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PHOTO COURTESY OF MIAMI INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After being released from prison, Camilo, a troubled soul, tries to redeem himself, and reconnect with his young daughter Sophia. This drama centers on how \u201cthe mistakes we make affect those we love,\u201d said director Rita Pereyra.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The filming process for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El Primer Dia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was slightly messy. It was shot in just three days, with one night to edit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cI was slating my own film, but it worked so well because everyone believed in the film and I think it shows,\u201d Pereyra said. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aldo Pereyra, her brother, was trained to use sound equipment, and a friend helped out as a gaffer. The film was written by Pereyra with help from Martin Casta\u00f1eda, who was also director of photography, and produced by Andrea Estrada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She believes the film will impress at CinemaSlam, particularly for its cinematography. The look of the film is peculiar, due to how it was shot. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe never used a tripod, the whole thing was shot hand-held,\u201d Pereyra said. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her next film, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alejandro,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is currently in pre-production. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEssentially, it&#8217;s a film about leaving behind the only life you&#8217;ve ever known<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your home, family, friends<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and starting from scratch in a foreign place; how we adapt and assimilate, or fail to successfully cope with such changes,\u201d Pereyra said of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alejandro<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cI think a lot of us can relate to this, especially here in Miami.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li><b> \u00a0<em>TOP SHELF<\/em> &#8211; Directed by Timothy Wilcox<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28499\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28499\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-28499\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Top-Shelf-1024x568.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Top-Shelf-1024x568.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Top-Shelf-300x166.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Top-Shelf-768x426.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Top-Shelf-1536x852.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Top-Shelf-2048x1135.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Top-Shelf-800x445.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28499\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PHOTO COURTESY OF MIAMI INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This comedy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adventure film is about a man\u2014played by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0458514\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Martin Klebba<\/span><\/a> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pirates of the Caribbean, Project X<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who is dealing with cabin fever. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Director Timothy Wilcox, another MDC graduate of the B.A.S. program described the shooting process as fun, stressful, and educational for him and his team. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What makes this film special is its live action, cartoonish nature, \u201cthe whole thing is very outlandish,\u201d Wilcox said. The characters, he describes as bright and peculiar. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At CinemaSlam, Wilcox hopes to make good connections and friends, \u201cat the end of the day, those awards for best actress, best picture, best director\u2014that\u2019s all good, but I just want to make people laugh. It\u2019s all about the experience.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wilcox is currently working on a sequel to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Top Shelf<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> titled <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cookie<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, written from the perspective of a chocolate chip cookie. <\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li><b> \u00a0<em>WHITE BLOOD CELL<\/em> &#8211; Directed by Frederick Criswell<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28496\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28496\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-28496\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/White-Blood-Cell.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/White-Blood-Cell.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/White-Blood-Cell-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/White-Blood-Cell-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28496\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PHOTO COURTESY OF MIAMI INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">White Blood Cell <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is an action\/drama story about two teenagers who are hunted down by a government agent after they witness a murder and receive stolen documents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Current B.A.S. student and director, Fred Criswell, said his favorite aspect of the filming process was pre-production, \u201cit was the most optimistic and creative.
