It may not be a unicorn, but Miami Dade College trustees<\/span><\/a> are looking for something incomparable to replace retiring president Eduardo J. <\/span>Padr\u00f3n.<\/span><\/p>\n

Padr\u00f3n announced his retirement on Feb. 1<\/span><\/a>, ending a near 50-year tenure at the College and almost 25 years as president. With his departure set for August, that has required the Board of Trustees\u2014and their hired group, Diversified Search\u2014to intensify their search for his successor.<\/span><\/p>\n

Who that successor is, though, is another question.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t like the term \u2018unicorn,\u2019\u2019 said vice chair Jose K. Fuentes, referring to an article by the <\/span>Miami Herald<\/span><\/i> that describes the search in that context. \u201cI don\u2019t think our vision is that we want a unicorn because, first of all, it\u2019s mythological, it\u2019s non-existent\u2014it\u2019s not going to happen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

What the College does want, though, is someone who can carry on the traits of Padr\u00f3n that spearheaded MDC to become the nation\u2019s largest higher education institution. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI want someone who\u2019s going to be there and lead the College in its continued path of being the preeminent college in the United States, America\u2019s College,\u201d Fuentes said.<\/span><\/p>\n

That involves finding someone who can speak to the group that is ultimately affected by the decision: the more than 165,000 student body population.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOur first priority [is the] students,\u201d Fuentes said. \u201cWe have such a diversified body of students. We want to make sure that the students have someone that understands them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The role is being pushed through an open-call listing, with minimum requirements including a doctorate from an accredited institution and at least 10 years of senior management experience, with six of them at an educational institution. <\/span><\/p>\n

That tight-lipped process is being organized by Diversified Search, a firm that specializes in finding candidates for large organizations. According to John Mestepey, an executive director with the firm, it will support the College\u2019s selection committee on fielding applications and screening candidates, though the firm would not comment on much else.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s pretty routine,\u201d said Juan Mendieta, MDC\u2019s director of communications. \u201cThey do all of the support and the outreach\u2014they\u2019re the experts.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

However, the search isn\u2019t being narrowly defined by its job posting.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe there\u2019s some things in the job description that may have been added that maybe the person doesn\u2019t have, but maybe they meet eight out of 10 points in the job description,\u201d Fuentes said. \u201cI\u2019m not ruling out anyone at this point.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

According to sources familiar with the process, some of the names floated to board members in conversation include former Florida governor Jeb Bush, former congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and former chancellor for the Florida College System Madeline Pumariega.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Ros-Lehtinen\u2019s case, she believes it will be hard to replace the legacy of Padr\u00f3n.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s hard to think of Miami Dade College without automatically thinking of the visual representation of Eduardo Padr\u00f3n,\u201d said Ros-Lehtinen, now a senior adviser with the international law firm Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld. \u201cIt\u2019s just difficult to fathom [MDC] without his presence and his spirit and his guidance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

However, Ros-Lehtinen unequivocally ruled out the position from her future.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a great honor and I would truly be honored to have that position,\u201d she said. \u201c[But] I am not going to be in consideration. I\u2019m very happy where I am and that\u2019s where I\u2019m staying.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

For Pumariega, she believes any leader must have the College\u2019s values at heart.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMiami Dade College is the community\u2019s college. Miami Dade is really that beacon of hope for the community,\u201d Pumariega said. \u201cThere\u2019s an opportunity for a leader to come in and leverage that success, to build on that legacy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Pumariega demurred on whether she would take the position herself.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not really considering the position right now,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even with those values in mind, it will not be the easiest search. The College is committing itself to a summer timetable, though there is an issue of the board\u2019s composition. Florida Politics reported last month that Governor Ron DeSantis has recalled four board members: Susan Amat, Rolando Montoya, Juan C. Zapata and Benjamin Leon III, leaving doubt as to whether a new replacement could impact the decision.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Fuentes\u2019 mind, though, the Board has to keep on moving.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe do have a number of board members that are, I\u2019ll call it the \u2018bubble term,\u2019 but we have to go forth as if everyone\u2019s in place,\u201d Fuentes said. \u201cI think the Board and Chairman Navarro has really taken this approach of, we\u2019re moving forward and everything we\u2019re doing is going to be in place in case we have to switch boards or change boards.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Governor\u2019s office did not respond to multiple email and phone requests for comment concerning the board members by the time <\/span>The Reporter <\/span><\/i>went to print.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite those factors, the search will be done with the ultimate goal in mind: finding someone that holds MDC as their ultimate passion.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is such an important position for the College and second to the county and the community that our focus is really trying to get the process correct,\u201d Fuentes said. \u201cBecause, if we mess up that, the end result is going to be a bad cake.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
