Students buzz to their peers, describing their cap designs. Parents quickly fill the aisles, trying to position themselves to see their child walk the stage. The moment serves as a pivotal transition for parents, watching their future enter a new phase in their life. It\u2019s a change for the students as well, paving the way for new opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These feelings are what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/end-of-an-era-padron-stepping-as-president\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">retiring<\/span><\/a> Miami Dade College president Eduardo J. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Padr\u00f3n has always fought for, which makes his last commencement the most fitting way to mark his end.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8212;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eduardo Jos\u00e9 Padr\u00f3n was born on June 26, 1944 in Santiago, Cuba during a historically tumultuous period. Fidel Castro took control of Cuba in 1959, making it difficult for anyone to prosper in the country. That led the 16-year-old refugee, with his younger brother in tow, on a quest dictated by his mother: go to the United States, get a college education and increase your opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTo me, opportunity is something I value tremendously,\u201d Padr\u00f3n said during an October interview with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Reporter<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cYou have to create your own opportunity with what you do, your demeanor, your behavior, your ability to persevere.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Padr\u00f3n arrived in the United States, he enrolled at Miami Senior High School. It wasn\u2019t an easy journey. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He worked odd jobs ranging from delivering newspapers to washing dishes<\/span><b>,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sometimes getting only three hours of sleep. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhatever came my way, I did\u2014and then [went] to school,\u201d Padr\u00f3n said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using the savings he accrued, he applied to prestigious schools like Princeton, Brown and other nationally-recognized institutions. He was rejected by all of them<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A peer then recommended he apply to MDC (then Dade County Junior College) to pursue an associate\u2019s in business administration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis institution changed my life,\u201d Padr\u00f3n said. \u201cMy sense of gratitude toward what is now known as Miami Dade College is immense. Faced with a multitude of breakfast options, mostly pastries, Padr\u00f3n greets everyone at the North and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/mdc-renames-interamerican-campus-in-honor-of-eduardo-j-padron\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Eduardo J. Padr\u00f3n Campus<\/span><\/a> graduation as though they\u2019re old friends. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though this is Padr\u00f3n\u2019s last commencement day as president, you wouldn\u2019t know it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of emotion,\u201d Padr\u00f3n said with a smile. \u201cThis is the culmination of students\u2019 work. I\u2019m satisfied we were able to do what\u2019s expected of us.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He goes back to working the room before he\u2019s called to join a line of distinguished guests, including North and Eduardo J. Padr\u00f3n Campus President Malou C. Harrison, MDC Board of Trustee members Jose Fuentes and Anay Abraham and commencement speaker David Oxtoby, president of the American Academy of Arts &amp; Sciences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ceremony itself is, first and foremost, a tribute to him. Each student holds glowing glasses, commemorating his signature red spectacles. The opening theme from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Game of Thrones <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plays as he walks to the stage<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[Padr\u00f3n is] a giant upon whose shoulders we stand and deserves recognition,\u201d Hansel Caudales, the EJP Campus\u2019 student government association president, said while introducing the video, which featured snapshots of Padr\u00f3n\u2019s time at MDC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A pre-recorded video featuring Finn the Shark showing students the pathway to success lies through Padr\u00f3n\u2019s glasses plays for the more than 1,600 students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The excitement carries through to the Homestead ceremony at the Kendall Campus gymnasium, where Padr\u00f3n sits again center stage. The ceremony\u2019s speaker is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flchamber.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Florida Chamber of Commerce<\/span><\/a> president Mark Wilson, who gives a speech centered on the idea that, to enter the workforce today, one must compete against the \u201cglobal one percent.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost 50 years ago, Padr\u00f3n would have probably said the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8212;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After two years at Dade County Junior College, Padr\u00f3n fought to achieve his interpretation of the American Dream: to become very wealthy. In his mind, making something of himself fulfilled the promise he made to his mother, especially in a country that sees wealth as the door to prosperity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That ambition carried him on a pathway to economics, leading him to a bachelor\u2019s degree from Florida Atlantic University and a master\u2019s and doctorate from the University of Florida. It also led to several job offers, including a role with DuPont in Wilmington, Delaware.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, when he informed his college professors, they pushed for him to take a different path: teaching a new wave of students, \u201cpaying back\u201d his education. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After much thought, Padr\u00f3n agreed to a one-year commitment to teach economics. Halfway through that year, he found his calling in education. It led to roles as a department chair, academic dean and becoming campus and college president.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve realized that, in life, happiness comes in different ways,\u201d Padr\u00f3n said in October. \u201cDoing what I do gives me the greatest sense of opportunities I could ever hope for.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And opportunities have surely presented themselves to him. He\u2019s been offered numerous roles in the private sector, ambassadorships to Panama and Colombia (the first under the Carter administration, the second under Clinton\u2019s) and positions on an endless number of councils and committees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, he serves as a member of Council on Foreign Relations\u2019 Board of Directors, where he oversees CFR\u2019s efforts to expand into the educational space. He recently came off a role with the Aspen Institute\u2019s Knight Commission on Trust, Media, and Democracy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, he\u2019s kept his priorities at home. He\u2019s worked to expand the College\u2019s programs like the Idea Center, MAGIC, the Miami Book Fair and the Miami Film Festival, aiming to give MDC a cultural and technological edge\u2014the main reason, in 2016, former President Barack Obama awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation\u2019s highest civilian honor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is something that, to me, everyday, I wake up and look forward to being here,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a way of really feeling like I\u2019m doing something meaningful and significant.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou have to have a passion. Padr\u00f3n, who has served as the College&#8217;s president for almost 25 years, is retiring this August. <br \/>CHRISTIAN ORTEGA \/ THE REPORTER<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8212;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Passion is what took over Watsco\u2019s green room before the Wolfson and Hialeah Campus ceremony. Padr\u00f3n is sitting at a table with the ceremony\u2019s highest guests, vice chair Fuentes on his left and honorary degree recipient Paul DiMare on his right. DiMare is arguing with Sol Trujillo, the commencement\u2019s keynote speaker, on whether Russia or China serves as the United States\u2019 primary adversary. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lenore Rodicio, executive vice president and provost<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the sole internal candidate vying to be Padr\u00f3n\u2019s successor<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the only other individual still in commencement regalia save for Padr\u00f3n himself. She\u2019s viewed by several high-ranking College officials as a worthy replacement for him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s such a surreal thing,\u201d Rodicio said. \u201cHe\u2019s such an impactful leader, [but] I\u2019m happy he\u2019s still going to be around.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wolfson and Hialeah Campus\u2019 ceremony adds a special guest<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TheDream.US founder Gaby Pacheco, who served as one of Padr\u00f3n\u2019s mentees during her time at MDC. They became so close she asked him to walk her halfway down the aisle during her wedding in December of 2012. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So Pacheco jumped at the opportunity to honor him, knowing the weight of what his last commencement would mean. During the ceremony, she leads a group of alumni that view Padr\u00f3n in high regard. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a moment of reflection,\u201d Pacheco said after the procession. \u201cHe\u2019s been able to grow this institution into the staple that it is today. This serves as a challenge to be continued\u2014that\u2019s what\u2019s going to be needed for this institution to move forward. It\u2019s a scary thing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can Eduardo J. Padr\u00f3n be replaced? The description in the presidential profile created by Diversified Search, the group hired by the College to aid in its process, is seeking \u201ca champion that can cultivate and support a diverse and inclusive College community built upon accessibility, affordability and transformational education\u201d for \u201cDemocracy\u2019s College&#8230;a title that we do not take lightly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That benchmark doesn\u2019t fully describe the role Padr\u00f3n plays, but that\u2019s mainly because the one he\u2019s carved is unique. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He hasn\u2019t announced a preferred candidate, electing to stay out of the search process. The search committee tasked with finding his successor has complained the timeline to choose an appropriate candidate is too short, only agreeing on a June interview date after much debate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But today, MDC\u2019s future isn\u2019t on Padr\u00f3n\u2019s mind. Surrounded by more than 13,000 students walking during graduation, his focus lies in the success of the graduates today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen I retire, MDC would be 60 years old\u2014a good time for a transition.
