It features three women and one black male<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Paul Broadie\u00a0II<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Connecticut State College and University System\u2014Housatonic Community College president; <\/span><b>Divina Grossman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences president and chief academic officer; <\/span><b>Lenore Rodicio<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MDC executive vice president and provost and <\/span><b>Reagan Romali<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Long City Beach College president and Long Beach Community College District superintendent will meet with the College\u2019s Board of Trustees on July 22 and 23 for in-person interviews. A new president is expected to be announced on July 24. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They were selected based on their leadership qualities, unique management styles, past achievements and, more importantly\u2014future vision for the College.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beverly Moore-Garcia, former Kendall and West Campus president and Carlos Turner Cortez, the President of San Diego Continuing Education were not selected. Both Wolfson and Ernie Diaz were not present for the second round of interviews.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bernie Navarro, the chairman of both the search committee and the Board of Trustees, said the process was a success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe process worked out like it should,\u201d Navarro said in an interview with <i>The Reporter<\/i>. \u201cIt was an exhaustive process and we went through it and I think it yielded what we wanted, which is the absolute best leader for our institution.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Paul Broadie II<\/b><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16332\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16332\" style=\"width: 196px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16332\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Paul-Broadie-II_web-196x300.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Paul Broadie II.\" width=\"196\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Paul-Broadie-II_web-196x300.jpg 196w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Paul-Broadie-II_web.jpg 653w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 196px) 100vw, 196px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16332\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PHOTO COURTESY OF PAUL BROADIE II<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When looking at Broadie\u2019s application, the committee was perplexed with one fact: how could a man run two completely different colleges?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThose two institutions have very distinct identities, very distinct cultures, and I have to navigate both of those distinct identities and cultures,\u201d Broadie said in his video interview. \u201cWhat I found is that it\u2019s very important to understand the culture of the community before any decision-making process takes place.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That sums up Broadie\u2019s role as president of Housatonic Community College and Gateway Community College. The former, which caters to 5,000 students and where he\u2019s served since 2015, was named one of the 150 community colleges in the nation by the Aspen Institute. Due to his success with HCC, the Connecticut State College and University System President asked Broadie to take over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gatewaycc.edu\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Gateway Community College<\/span><\/a>, the sixth largest college in the state at 24,000 students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Broadie came to the state from New York, where he transitioned from the business sector into education after the president of Mercy College offered him a job and tuition toward his master\u2019s if he became an admissions counselor. Following that, he transferred to the State University of New York at New Paltz, Westchester Community College and Orange County Community College, the latter of which he served almost 13 years before arriving at HCC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Committee took great interest in his leadership experience, noting his genuine nature, open communication and results-driven mindset are what was needed in an MDC president.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI felt like I had a conversation with him as opposed to coming to us with a whole litany of cliches,\u201d said Roberto Martinez, a committee member and lawyer with Colson Hicks Eidson. \u201cI thought he was a formidable candidate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Divina Grossman<\/b><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16335\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16335\" style=\"width: 211px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16335\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Divina-cropped_web-211x300.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Divina Grossman.\" width=\"211\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Divina-cropped_web-211x300.jpg 211w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Divina-cropped_web.jpg 690w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 211px) 100vw, 211px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16335\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PHOTO COURTESY OF UNIVERSITY OF ST. After arriving in Miami in 1977, she worked on her master\u2019s at the University of Miami and helped start a master\u2019s program in nursing at Florida International University. She remained at FIU for 22 years, serving in roles ranging from professor to, eventually, the Vice President of Engagement, where she reported directly to FIU President Mark Rosenberg. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grossman then transferred to the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, where she served as Chancellor from 2012 through 2015. However, despite a promised four-year renewal, the new president at the time opted to go in a different direction, leaving Grossman to remain at UMass Dartmouth as a full-time professor. In January 2018, she was offered the position of president at the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences (USAHS).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She came to the Committee\u2019s attention during the final \u201cslate\u201d meeting through an external nomination by Democratic Congresswoman Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, which helped advance her as an active candidate. She used this to her advantage during the interviews, citing her involvement in implementing the Tesla START program, and working with the Lumina Foundation and Achieving the Dream. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rodicio has spent the majority of her career at the College\u2014beginning as an adjunct Chemistry professor in 2002. She was promoted to Academic and Student Affairs Provost in 2014 before taking on the role of Executive Vice President and Provost in 2016. Rodicio comes from a STEM background\u2014she graduated with a bachelor\u2019s degree in Chemistry from Barry University and a PhD in Chemistry from Louisiana State University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[Miami-Dade County] is a very special place. I&#8217;ve been privileged to call it home,\u201d Rodicio said during her interview. \u201cBeing an external candidate would require someone to become adjusted to our culture, and then to the large complexity of the institution.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rodicio\u2019s position at the College has allowed her to work directly alongside retiring MDC Eduardo J. Padr<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00f3n, which can serve as a gateway to retain the familiarity of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Padr<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00f3n after he leaves his position.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHis legacy is the legacy of Miami Dade College,\u201d Rodicio said in an interview with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Reporter<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201cIt\u2019s the innovation. Preserving the innovation of the institution. She hopes to use her background and family to connect with the diverse student population at MDC. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I am the Miami Dade College student, and the Miami Dade College student is me,&#8221; Romali responded to the Board upon being asked why she is fit for the position. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romali has served as president of Harry S. Truman College and currently oversees Long Beach City College as president. She credits her success to an ability to adapt to the needs of the community, and learning to embrace unfamiliarity. When asked how she would handle the political oversight of the position, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romali said her unfamiliarity with the political leadership in Tallahassee was a positive because she has no &#8220;political debts.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During her interview, she referenced handling an inner-city violence problem that caused 17 shootings near her campus. She brought the leaders of the three neighborhood gangs involved in the shootings to her office to settle their disputes, and offer them a chance to enroll in classes.<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Miami Foundation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> CEO Javier Soto recalled a similar program <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Padr<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00f3n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> implemented in his early days as college president to tackle inner-city violence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI am flattered to be compared in any way at all to Dr. Eduardo Padr\u00f3n, he\u2019s a hero of mine,\u201d Romali said in an interview with<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Reporter<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cI\u2019ve been watching his career for 25 years, he is a man of courage and bold vision and I am honored to be in his company.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romali believes that her talent for surrounding herself with people smarter than her will serve her well if she is selected as president at MDC. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m good at finding talented people that are even better than me,\u201d Romali told the search committee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staff writers Corbin Bolies and Alina Halley contributed to this article.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After two days of video interviews, Miami Dade College\u2019s Presidential Search Committee voted to send four finalists to the Board of Trustees, the penultimate stage of the four-month search process.
