Camila De la Rosa, an 18-year-old-setter from the Dominican Republic, is one of several Lady Shark volleyball<\/span><\/a> players with international experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The 5-foot-9 inch tall freshman played on the Dominican Republic\u2019s U-15 National Team when she was 13. De la Rosa has also represented her country at various international tournaments in the U-18, U-20, and U-23 age groups.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her biggest tournament thus far was at the 2017 FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U-18 World Championship. Although De la Rosa\u2019s team lost to Italy, three sets to one in the championship game, no other U-18 Dominican girls\u2019 volleyball team has ever made it that far.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During the tournament, De la Rosa shared a locker room with Erika Asencio, who is now her teammate.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe World Championship was a wonderful experience because we put a lot of effort and sacrifice to get there,\u201d said Asencio, an outside hitter for the Lady Sharks. \u201cCamila and I have been growing together from a very young age and being with her again makes me feel confident, but also, more responsible because I know there is a lot of pressure, even more than when we play for the Dominican team.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In eight games with the Lady Sharks<\/span><\/a>, De la Rosa has established herself, adding 252 assists and 68 digs. She is battling her roommate, Ana Araujo, for a spot in the starting lineup.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCamila is a very young and mature player that is going to bring a lot of experience and knowledge to this team,\u201d said Lady Sharks head coach Origenes \u201cKiko\u201d Benoit. \u201cShe is a silent worker, a very disciplined girl that knows how to be a team player.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0De la Rosa discovered her passion for the sport when she was 11 years old after watching a volleyball tournament for the first time. Two years later, she joined Los Prados Volleyball Club in her native city of Santo Domingo.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI have grown a lot as an athlete. I have five years playing the sport and all those years have taught me a lot of discipline, teamwork, and hard work,\u201d De la Rosa said. \u201cI really want to bring all those values and share them with my teammates here at MDC.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At MDC, De la Rosa is studying international business at Kendall Campus. She aspires to own her own business, but is open to opportunities in professional volleyball.<\/span><\/p>\n

With the Lady Sharks, De la Rosa hopes to continue the team\u2019s rich tradition of winning. The team is 7-1 this year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy dream is to win the national championship and win absolutely everything here at Miami Dade College,\u201d De la Rosa said, \u201cThat is my goal, and I believe we have a capable team to do that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Lady Sharks next game is Sept. 17 at\u00a0 6 p.m. versus Palm Beach State College at home at the Theodore R. Gibson Health Center, 11011 S.W. 104 St.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
