{"id":16885,"date":"2019-09-25T13:56:56","date_gmt":"2019-09-25T17:56:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=16885"},"modified":"2021-01-13T14:20:53","modified_gmt":"2021-01-13T19:20:53","slug":"firm-emerges-as-frontrunner-to-conduct-mdc-presidential-search","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/firm-emerges-as-frontrunner-to-conduct-mdc-presidential-search\/","title":{"rendered":"Firm Emerges As Frontrunner To Conduct MDC Presidential Search"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AGB Search, a prominent academic headhunting firm that conducted Broward College\u2019s presidential search in 2018, has emerged as the frontrunner to lead Miami Dade College\u2019s quest for a new president.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Board of Trustees Vice-Chair Carlos Migoya and trustee Michael Bileca heard pitches from three firms at a board workshop yesterday: AGB Search, Carter Baldwin and Spelman Johnson\u2014the only non-academic firm<\/span><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey get what we\u2019re trying to do,\u201d Migoya said in assessing AGB\u2019s presentation. \u201cThey did their homework. They\u2019re plugged-in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bileca echoed that sentiment: \u201cOne firm that stood out the most is AGB.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Migoya and Bileca were charged by BOT chairman Bernie Navarro to hear the pitches. They will present their recommendation for AGB Search at the next Board meeting on Oct. 7. The group will then vote. \u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AGB Search has facilitated eight presidential searches at Florida institutions. In 2018, they assisted Broward College in the selection of Gregory Adam Haile; they are currently conducting Barry University\u2019s search.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A running theme throughout Tuesday\u2019s meeting was whether the firms were willing to look at candidates outside of academia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We want to look at traditional and non-traditional candidates,&#8221; Migoya said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each firm stressed that casting a wide net with candidates from varied career paths and educational backgrounds was integral.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are military, business and healthcare professionals that are currently college presidents,\u201d said Spelman Johnson search associate Quincy Martin during his presentation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The majority of AGB Search\u2019s hires have an academic background, however, their portfolio also extends to candidates outside of the field, such as former college baseball player and business tycoon Tim Cost at Jacksonville University in 2018.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe know the idea of a successful candidate is evolving,\u201d said Melissa Trotta, associate managing principal at AGB Search.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AGB Search estimates their search will last six months and includes a year of transitional support for the new president. Their cost is calculated based on a third of the incoming president\u2019s annual salary, plus an additional\u00a0 $10,000 in consultation and lodging expenses and $6,000 in advertising fees.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In their search with Broward College, AGB Search charged $123,919\u2014a $90,000 contracted amount with the remaining $33,919 going to consultation, travel, lodging and recreational expenses, according to invoices <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Reporter<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> obtained from Broward College.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carter Baldwin is requesting a $130,000 flat fee, and Spelman Johnson estimated they will charge a third of the president\u2019s salary\u2014with consultation, travel and lodging fees not included.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The College has already shelled out more than $167,000 to the Diversified Search, who assisted them for around five months in their previous presidential search.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the College is adamant they will not cut corners to find the best replacement for Eduardo J. Padr\u00f3n, who retired at the end of August.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is not an issue of price,\u201d said Interim College President
