{"id":17000,"date":"2019-10-04T14:55:48","date_gmt":"2019-10-04T18:55:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=17000"},"modified":"2021-05-23T17:26:54","modified_gmt":"2021-05-23T21:26:54","slug":"machado","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/machado\/","title":{"rendered":"Student With Cerebral Palsy Aspires To Be Next Albert Einstein"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Asnay Machado was eight months old, his parents noticed his legs were spasming and he couldn\u2019t sit without assistance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe had to go through a lot of medical tests to find out what was going on,\u201d said Machado\u2019s father, Asnay Machado Alvarez. \u201cOnce we had the results, we tried to live a life as normal as possible, trying to engage him with school and his community as just one more kid.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Machado, an 18-year-old studying physics at Wolfson and Hialeah Campus, was born with <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/cerebral-palsy\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20353999#targetText=Cerebral%20palsy%20is%20a%20group,develops%2C%20most%20often%20before%20birth.\">cerebral palsy<\/a><\/span>\u2014a disorder that affects his motor skills. He uses a wheelchair and has a hard time moving and maintaining his balance.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe\u2019s my hero,\u201d Machado\u2019s father said. \u201cAfter seeing everything he goes through, you ask yourself: would I be able to live like this, like he\u2019s doing? You get an idea about the challenges he has to face and you realize that he has fought through so much. He for sure doesn\u2019t let it hold him back.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Machado was born in 2000 in Camag\u00fcey<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Cuba<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He found it difficult to socialize and write when he started school at four.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Student With Cerebral Palsy Aspires To Be Next Albert Einstein\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WxbYoDsp4xY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt took me until the beginning of third grade to learn cursive [in Cuba, cursive is taught at a younger age],\u201d Machado said. \u201cI spent the whole summer\u2014June to August\u2014practicing to get it right.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At age six, he began receiving botox injection procedures in his knee flexors to reduce muscle stiffness. It allowed him to stand and walk better for three months, but the effect eventually vanished.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soon, he was undergoing physical therapy three times a week. He used a machine to pull himself into a standing position before settling back into a seated one. Sessions lasted four to eight hours a day with the assistance of nurses and doctors at the Centro Nacional de Rehabilitaci\u00f3n: Hospital Julio D\u00edaz and Hospital Ortop\u00e9dico: Frank Pa\u00eds. That lasted for six years, though he continued a similar regimen at home for two more.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI had a happy childhood though,\u201d Machado said. \u201cI never fully realized the extent to which my condition affected me until elementary school.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Moving To Miami<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He moved to Miami in November of 2014 because of the political turmoil in Cuba, and enrolled at Westland Hialeah Senior High School.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctors at Nicklaus Children\u2019s Hospital diagnosed him with spastic cerebral palsy and performed surgery when he was 15 to help straigten his legs. The procedure allowed him to stand for longer periods of time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Machado devotes nearly an hour and a half every day to exercise his arms and legs using a stander machine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2017, he began pursuing an associate\u2019s degree in physics at Miami Dade College.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI took physics in tenth grade and fell in love with it,\u201d Machado said. \u201cYou can describe the world not just through words, but through math. I want to understand reality\u2014how the world works.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a freshman, Machado joined Year Up, a one-year program at the College that provides students with skills and training to use in their careers. He graduated from the program in July.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAsnay did extremely well in the program,\u201d said Lucia Angeles, site director of Year Up and Machado\u2019s former coach. \u201cHe is one of our high-performing students, by which I mean he is extremely open to feedback, willing to make adjustments [and to] implement suggestions right away.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Machado underwent six months of networking, public speaking and business etiquette training before interning at the School of Global Business, Trade and Transportation at Wolfson Campus as part of the program. For six months, he helped low-income residents prepare their tax forms at the College\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Despite having difficulties multitasking, he also assisted at the front desk\u2014answering the phone, greeting visitors and assisting in clerical work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He is on track to receive his associate\u2019s degree at the end of the Spring 2020 semester. Classmates describe him as intelligent, bold and humorous.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI find it amazing how he is conscious of his disability but doesn&#8217;t let that hold him back,\u201d said Siumey Chao, who studied with Asnay in high school and now at MDC. \u201cHe actually makes jokes about his wheelchair and never complains\u2026 just laughs it off and continues with his everyday.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She\u2019s confident he\u2019ll win a Nobel Prize one day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBe ready for that,\u201d Chao said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The Future<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After earning his bachelor\u2019s degree, Machado hopes to attend graduate school at Princeton University\u2014the alma mater of his favorite scientist, Albert Einstein\u2014in pursuit of opportunities in the research field.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite his success, Machado continues to face challenges that come with living with a\u00a0 disability.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His biggest hurdle is transporting a $7,000 electric wheelchair that doesn&#8217;t fit in a normal passenger car. He is forced to use Miami-Dade County\u2019s Special Transportation Service. All rides under the service must be requested a day in advance, waits can take up to thirty minutes and routes travel through backroads, extending travel time.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOnce you do get into the car, the routes are not made by a person who actually sits down and thinks about [whether], geographically, the routes make sense,\u201d Machado said. \u201cThe problem is all the worse considering there\u2019s no other service that does it, so there\u2019s a lot of people using the service at any given time so it creates a mess.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Machado usually wakes up at six in the morning for his 9 a.m. class. It takes him nearly an hour to get ready for school and often one to two hours for the transportation to arrive and take him to school. The transportation\u2019s irregularity has caused him to arrive late to work or school on multiple occasions, according to Machado.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In December, he began a GoFundMe page to raise funds for an accomodation vehicle that could carry his wheelchair. Machado\u2019s campaign has raised $2,018 but wheelchair accessible vehicles can cost up to $35,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cComplaining doesn\u2019t solve anything,\u201d Machado said. \u201cYou still have the problem plus you\u2019re wasting the time that you have to solve it complaining. [If] you want to be great, you need to perform.
