The Miami Dade College’s women\u2019s basketball team<\/span><\/a> is counting on a group of freshmen to help them improve on last year\u2019s 22 win season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Top a<\/span>dditions include point guards: freshman Arquesha Hightower from Miami Southridge Senior High School and sophomore transfer Rio Yamazaki, who played at South Georgia Technical College.<\/span><\/p>\n

The team\u2019s goal is to advance farther in the playoffs this season. Last year, the Lady Sharks lost 77-57 in the first round of the Florida College System Activities Association State Tournament to <\/span>Florida Northwest State College<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re trying to get to the state championship and obviously get to Nationals,\u201d Lady Sharks head coach Susan Summons said. \u201cI\u2019ve got a talented group of young ladies. I\u2019m excited about them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Hightower, 18, sees this season as an opportunity to redeem what she believes was a poor\u00a0 senior year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI started off freshman year with the point average of 16-something, it went up to 22 and ended up dropping down due to some personal issues I was having,\u201d Hightower said. \u201cLast year was kind of rough but here I can start over.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Hightower played 14 games for the Spartans last year, averaging 11.5 points, 2.9 assists and 2.4 steals per game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yamazaki, 21, <\/span>played 30 games for the Lady Jets last year. She averaged 3.7 points and 2.9 assists per game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Lady Sharks lone returning player is also the team\u2019s best player<\/span>\u2060<\/span>\u2014Daliyah Brown<\/span><\/a><\/span>.<\/span> She <\/span>averaged a team-leading 20.2 points last year and was named the Southern Conference Player of the Year. Brown was also named to the All-State team, an All-Southern Conference first-team player and an All-American.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI was worried because I\u2019m like, man, I got all these new people. I gotta teach them like everything. But it\u2019s also very exciting because I got a whole different group of girls, different personalities,\u201d Brown said. \u201cI got to meet new people, and I get to connect with different people. So this is fun.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite a successful freshman campaign, Brown wants to improve on her leadership,\u00a0 communication skills and confidence.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBetter leadership for sure, especially for the young ones, everyone is a freshman here except for [Yamazaki],\u201d Brown said. \u201cThey all have the ultimate respect for me. They all look up to me. It’s nice having someone always looking for answers from you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Yamazaki and Brown were selected as captains this season by the coaching staff.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWith a combination of [Brown and Yamazaki] and their maturity and leadership and kind of wrapping that maturity and leadership around the ten freshmen,\u201d Summons said, \u201cI think it will be a pretty good season.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Lady Sharks start their season on the road versus <\/span><\/i>Hillsborough Community College <\/span><\/i>on Nov. 1 <\/span><\/i>at 5:30 p.m.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
