Two Miami Dade College literary publications\u2014<\/span>AXIS <\/span><\/i><\/span><\/a>at North Campus and <\/span>Urbana<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/a> at Eduardo J. Padr\u00f3n Campus\u2014have been selected as 2019 Pacemaker finalists by the Associated College Press in the two-year college literary arts category.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pacemakers are regarded as the top national award for literary magazines. <\/span>Axis<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>Urbana<\/span><\/i> were two of six finalists in their category. Work judged was published during the 2018-19 school year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSuch recognition validates our student\u2019s efforts and challenges them to continue to strive for high standards as they work on the next volume,\u201d said <\/span>Urbana <\/span><\/i>co-advisor Emily Sendin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Winners will be announced at the National College Media Convention on Nov. 2 in Washington, D.C.<\/span><\/p>\n

Both magazines have been nominated twice for the Pacemaker in their history. <\/span>AXIS<\/span><\/i> won the award last year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt seems to me that <\/span>AXIS<\/span><\/i> is gaining traction,\u201d said <\/span>AXIS<\/span><\/i> co-advisor Kathleen Noonan. \u201cStudents are becoming better at selecting pieces and we\u2019re getting great submissions. It gives [the students] confidence. It\u2019s not just their teacher telling them they\u2019re doing a good job, it\u2019s a bunch of people actually acknowledging and praising their work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The magazines feature various works of prose, poetry, art and photography from students enrolled at their respective campus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

AXIS<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/a> is the brainchild of English professors and former advisors Lisa Shaw and Maribel <\/span>P\u00e9rez<\/span>. They created the magazine in 2002. <\/span>Urbana<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/a> was birthed in 2007 by Sendin and a group of students that pushed for a creative magazine. They are strictly an online publication and\u00a0 publish content in English and Spanish.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Urbana<\/span><\/i> is the voice of the campus. It is the tool we use to achieve unison and collaboration,\u201d said Giselle Valdes, who serves as the current editor for <\/span>Urbana<\/span><\/i>.<\/span> \u201cBeing a bilingual magazine, it opens doors for those who thought were marginalized due to language barriers. It keeps all forms of art alive.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The publications have also been selected as Pinnacle Award finalists in the two-year Literary Magazine of the Year category by the College Media Association. Winners will be announced on Nov. 1 at ACP\/CMA Fall National College Media Convention.<\/span><\/p>\n

AXIS, <\/span><\/i>which has been nominated for the award for two straight years,<\/span> took home a Pinnacle award last year. This is <\/span>Urbana<\/span><\/i>\u2019s first nomination.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is wonderful to know our team’s hard work and dedication is being recognized,\u201d said Samantha Zenoz, who served as editor in chief of <\/span>Urbana<\/span><\/i> last year. \u201cWe hope that future volumes of <\/span>Urbana<\/span><\/i> will continue to provide a place where students can develop their artistic talents and that <\/span>Urbana<\/span><\/i> continues to be a home to the next generation of artists and writers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
