She quit the team after dealing with some mental health issues, she said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI didn\u2019t want to play basketball anymore but one of my friends, who plays basketball, slowly started getting me back into the sport and I started liking it again,\u201d Yamazaki said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She looked for a new school to continue her education. After emailing multiple coaches from across the country, she heard back from one, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcathletics.com\/sports\/wbkb\/index\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Lady Sharks<\/span><\/a>\u2019 head coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/coach-summons-garnering-national-recognition\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Susan Summons<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTalented, mature, strong point guard, strong and quick,\u201d Summons said in describing Yamazaki\u2019s best attributes. \u201cEveryday she\u2019s learning, going through a life lesson.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yamazaki, who is now studying accounting, credits Summons for getting her back on track in the classroom and on the basketball court.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI talked to her a lot before she decided to give me an offer,\u201d said Yamazaki, who is one of the Lady Sharks\u2019 co-captains. \u201cShe changed the way I used to think about things negatively and taught me how I should take care of myself. All things changed because of Coach Summons.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yamazaki was introduced to the game when she was eight years old. While attending her sisters\u2019 basketball game, a friend asked her why didn\u2019t she play. She learned the game and quickly grew to love it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In high school, she made the team but never played as a result she wasn\u2019t recruited by any colleges in Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After graduation, she came to the United States to attend a basketball camp at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. During the camp, she impressed the staff and was offered a scholarship. It was an opportunity for Yamazaki to prepare for college basketball and learn English.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEverybody was trying to help me understand English because I couldn\u2019t speak it,\u201d Yamazaki said. \u201cI would use google translate during practices to understand what the coaches would say. It was hard.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two years at IMG helped her get the offer to play at South Georgia Technical College. Now, Yamazaki is focused on helping the Lady Sharks.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLast year, I didn\u2019t go to nationals,\u201d Yamazaki said. \u201cI really want us to go this year. This team can make it to nationals, but first we need to go and win our conference title.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lady Sharks\u2019 next game is Nov. 8 at 5 p.m. versus Eastern Florida State College at the Theodore R.
