Nearly a year after the Board of Trustees started looking for Miami Dade College\u2019s next president, questions about the search’s transparency continue to bubble up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Today\u2019s meeting agenda vaguely listed the discussion of the presidential search as a \u201cBoard Member Discussion Item.\u201d In the past, the College has listed search discussions as \u201cBoard Member Discussion\u2014Presidential Search<\/span><\/a>\u201d and \u201cMiami Dade College Presidential Search\u2014Next Steps.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The documents, including the search committee list and presidential profile, were given to members of the media after the meeting began and were not projected on screens for the public to view.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhy weren\u2019t the timeline, profile and committee appointments shared in the Board packet or at least read aloud at the meeting today?,\u201d said Elizabeth Ramsay, president of the United Faculty of Miami Dade College<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ramsay added: \u201cThis is a perfect example of a failure to act with transparency.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

College officials said the items weren\u2019t posted on the presidential search website because they hadn\u2019t been voted on.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not going to apologize for anybody, but it\u2019s been a work in progress,\u201d Chairman Bernie Navarro said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s What Happened<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Trustees approved the presidential profile and set the search committee at 17 members. The last search had 15 members.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The College said it\u2019s looking for a leader that is able to clearly articulate its vision to the community, values academia, is well-connected politically, is adept at fundraising, can build partnerships with the community, embraces diversity and has a track record of leading a large organization. However, the profile makes no specific mention of academic credentials other than saying it \u201cprioritizes academic excellence.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA terminal degree is there. It\u2019s clear,\u201d Navarro said. \u201cYou can apply for the job if you have a terminal degree in your chosen profession, a doctoral degree is preferred.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The search committee will include: trustee <\/span>Nicole<\/b> Washington<\/b>, who will chair of the search committee; trustees <\/span>Anay<\/b> Abraham<\/b> and <\/span>Michael Bileca<\/b>; <\/span>Jeanne Jacobs<\/b>, president of Homestead Campus; <\/span>Fermin Vasquez<\/b>, senior director of campus administration at North Campus; <\/span>Marie Etienne<\/b>, a nursing professor, <\/span>Ece Karayalcin<\/b>, a film and digital production professor; <\/span>Wendy Guifarro<\/b>, a media support specialist; <\/span>Marianne Maduro<\/b>, an administrative assistant; <\/span>Samantha Hernandez<\/b>, president of Student Government Association at Kendall Campus; <\/span>Rick Beasley<\/b>, executive director of CareerSource South Florida; <\/span>Leigh-Ann Buchanan<\/b>, executive director of V<\/span>enture Caf<\/span>\u00e9<\/span> M<\/span>iami; <\/span>Robert Fernandez<\/b>, founder of RHF Law Firm, LLC.; <\/span>Rudy Fernandez<\/b>, chief of staff at the University of Miami and <\/span>Samantha Hoare<\/b>, executive director of Teach for America Miami-Dade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At Tuesday’s meeting, trustees motioned to add two additional representatives: a College alumni and an MDC Foundation member. They are expected to be selected by the January meeting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Foundation leaders are relieved to get a seat at the table.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe would like input on the process,\u201d said Alfredo Sal, chair of the MDC Foundation\u2019s Board.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During the session, issues were also raised about the committee\u2019s lack of members that served on the first search committee. <\/span>Etienne was the lone holdover.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Navarro said he was under the impression that the Board had agreed to incorporate past representatives, though none of the trustees nominated anyone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s about courtesy,\u201d said Jose Fuentes, former vice chair of the Board who served during the initial search. \u201cThese people invested a lot of time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Another item of discussion was led by trustee Marcell Felipe, who advocated delaying the search to develop the College\u2019s five-year strategic plan. The other trustees disagreed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s totally unwise for a Board to put a strategic plan together without a permanent [president],\u201d Migoya said, comparing the role to a corporate chief executive officer. \u201cWe as Board members cannot lead the strategic plan\u2014it has to be led by the CEO with the complete endorsement of the Board.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Leon Resigns\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

In another twist, the College publicly announced the resignation of trustee Benjam\u00edn Le\u00f3n III. He sent the letter to Governor Ron DeSantis last week, citing work constraints.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy time commitments to [Leon Medical Center] have now become too great for me to be able to fulfill the requirements of my position on the Board of the College,\u201d Le\u00f3n said in the letter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Navarro now stands as the only Board member to serve throughout both presidential searches. He said it\u2019s unclear who might replace Leon or when a new member will be appointed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

DeSantis\u2019 office did not respond to a request for comment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
