Members of <\/span>Urbana<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the literary arts magazine at\u00a0Eduardo J. Padr\u00f3n Campus<\/span><\/a><\/span>, sit around an audio recorder in a green classroom to discuss their recent video parody of Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro in <\/span>Fighting Communism with Humor<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To breakdown the video, the magazine’s co-editor-in-chief Giselle Valdes brought in Juan Martinez, the student who played the controversial figure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAt the beginning, I really didn’t like the idea that much because he\u2019s not such a good figure to perform,\u201d Martinez said during the recording. \u201cBy performing him, I could show the community here in Little Havana that might not know about the situation my country is facing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

They discussed the video during a taping of the literary magazine\u2019s first-ever podcast series, <\/span>Urbanites. <\/span><\/i>The series launched on Dec. 12.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

New episodes air every Friday. They explore the intricacies of the magazine and aim to reach out to students through the growing audio platform.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are hoping that students make it a habit of listening to our podcast, and become more involved with the literary and arts life of [EJP] Campus,\u201d said <\/span>Urbana\u2019s <\/span><\/i>advisor Emily Sendin. \u201cMany people don\u2019t even know we have a literary arts magazine. We are trying to change that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Students use the space to discuss <\/span>Urbana<\/span><\/i>\u2019s work, promote submission calls, announce contests, host guest interviews and discuss literature and art.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCreating the podcast was not only to inflict a change of spices to the artistic students of MDC, but to create that family and community bond among us all,\u201d said Marian Bulnes, one of the co-hosts of the podcast and co-editor-in-chief of <\/span>Urbana<\/span><\/i>. \u201cRecording, for us, is like a family gathering.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Ideas for the show come through the podcast\u2019s co-creators: Bulnes, Valdes, Daniela Hernadez, Laura Santos and Alejandra Almada. On a weekly basis, they brainstorm episode ideas with Sendin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are all so committed on this new project that we always find a time and a place to make our schedules work,\u201d Bulnes said. \u201cEncouragement and commitment is definitely something <\/span>Urbana<\/span><\/i> doesn’t lack.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The show is recorded every Friday. Almada edits it into a 10 to 30 minute recording, with\u00a0 results uploaded the same day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Each episode begins with a jazz medley of saxophone and piano, played and composed by 19-year-old EJP engineering student Juan Ignacio. He brings his piano to every taping.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The idea to create a podcast was born at the National College Media Convention\u00a0 Pinnacle Award Ceremony on Nov. 1 in Washington, D.C, where <\/span>Urbana<\/span><\/i> was selected as a Pinnacle Award finalist in the two-year Literary Magazine of the Year category. They realized one of the categories for awards was podcasts, and drew up plans to create their own.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe all looked at each other as if we had the same idea,\u201d Sendin said. \u201cWe should create [a podcast].\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

While working on the series, <\/span>conflicting schedules made it difficult for members to balance podcasting with their classes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe all have different schedules, and it\u2019s hard to get multiple people to work in a room together at the same time,\u201d Valdes said. \u201cWe try our best to accommodate all of our schedules because even though we\u2019re committed to this\u2014academics are still important.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

They hope the podcast inspires others to build confidence in their creative endeavors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe want the MDC community to explore creativity, seize their full potential and become confident artists,\u201d Bulnes said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
