{"id":17778,"date":"2020-01-24T13:19:34","date_gmt":"2020-01-24T18:19:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=17778"},"modified":"2020-05-28T15:07:16","modified_gmt":"2020-05-28T19:07:16","slug":"oscar-season-plays-it-safe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/oscar-season-plays-it-safe\/","title":{"rendered":"Oscar Season Plays It Safe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldenglobes.com\/winners-nominees\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Golden Globes Awards<\/span><\/a>, the first of many awards shows out of the way, the final outlook for the Academy Awards has begun to take shape.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amidst a field of films that had Martin Scorsese <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Irishman <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leading with five nominations, the film came away with zero Golden Globe awards, leading one to wonder if the film has the legs it needs to carry it through the Oscars. Its losses gave way to a surprise winner in Sam Mendes\u2019 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1917, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a one-shot-framed epic centering on World War I that only released widely a week after the Globes. In doing so, the war film now finds itself among the frontrunners for Best Picture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s not to say there is no competition. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quentin Tarantino&#8217;s<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once Upon a Time&#8230;in Hollywood <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Irishman <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">still lead the pack in a crowded year, with underdogs like Noah Baumbach\u2019s divorce drama <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/marriage-story-explores-what-divorce-does-to-a-home\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marriage Story <\/span><\/i><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and Boon Jong-Ho\u2019s twister <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parasite <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">still holding strong. That\u2019s also in competition with films like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joker, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which hasn\u2019t been tainted much by its initial controversy, Taika Watiti\u2019s Holocaust spoof <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jojo Rabbit <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and Greta Gerwig\u2019s revamp of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Little Women. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even with an added twist, the odds still aren\u2019t dramatically changed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even the acting fields are still remarkably safe. The two expected winners, Joaquin Phoenix for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joker <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and Ren<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00e9<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e Zellweger for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Judy, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">both claimed their respective trophies, besting the likes of Adam Driver\u2019s lost director from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marriage Story <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and Charlize Theron\u2019s transformation into Megyn Kelly for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bombshell. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The only added spice was Taron Egerton winning Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rocketman, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">restarting that film\u2019s Oscar conversations in a category that isn\u2019t Best Original Song.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That plays to the lead story among this year\u2019s film season, which is that, aside from the Best Picture race, there aren\u2019t any expected surprises. It\u2019s unlike the 2019 Oscars, which had Olivia Coleman triumph over Glenn Close for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Favourite <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in a race that seemed locked; or the 2018 season, which had <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Shape of Water <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beat out the likes of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get Out, Dunkirk <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lady Bird <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the top prize.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s not to say things can\u2019t change between now and the telecast. Still to come are awards from the production guilds (acting, writing, directing, producing, etc.), who each have their own track records in determining the eventual winners.
