The sound of a bell tinkling sends members from the Society Circus Player<\/span><\/a>s into a frenzy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Suddenly, someone yells: \u201cNew choice, new choice.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Members of the Miami-based improv comedy troupe frantically play out a scene that features three friends feasting on chicken wings at a local bowling alley.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Carlos Fernandez playfully mutters between scenes: \u201cYou\u2019re never too old to be weird, remember that.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The snippet is one of several improv games the performance group, an eight-member posse founded in 2014, rehearses weekly.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The comedy troupe\u2014co-founded by Dash Ruiz<\/span><\/a>, a media services coordinator at West Campus <\/span>and Alicia Garcia, an English professor at Eduardo J. Padr\u00f3n Campus\u2014has performed at more than <\/span>70 venues across Miami since forming in 2014.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They have\u00a0 previously hosted free improv workshops for children at the Shenandoah Branch Library.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs an adult, you don\u2019t get playtime, but improv is like, \u2018hey, we are having a playdate with my friends,\u2019\u201d Ruiz said. \u201cImprov is like a place for all the weirdos to go. We were all misfits and once we found improv, we found our tribe and we\u2019re all accepted.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Group members <\/span>range in age from 28 to 53. They perform once a month at shows, festivals or charity events. In the past, they have performed at the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital and JDRF, a non-profit that funds diabetes research for children. Every October, the <\/span>SCP hosts an improv show at West Campus for <\/span>Breast Cancer Awareness and Hispanic Heritage Month.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe do put a heavy focus on charity work and volunteering,\u201d Ruiz said. \u201cWe like to give back and do our best to raise awareness and let people know that improv is a thing. Not many people really know about improv, and give it a stigma that it\u2019s cheesy and corny.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The group formed in August of 2014 after another group<\/span>\u2014Negative 4 Months\u2014<\/span>that Garcia and several other members were a part of disbanded.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For five years, the SCP performed at Just The Funny, a comedy improv and sketch theater in Coral Gables, but they left that venue after issues arose with the tenant over performance times.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The group then hopstoched across venues in Miami for a year, but eventually found refuge in late 2019 at Duffy\u2019s Tavern, a restaurant in Westchester. They perform improv sketches there every other month.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes, we don\u2019t even know what\u2019s going to happen, so sometimes we crack ourselves up,\u201d Ruiz said. \u201cScripted performances are just [like] \u2018I need to get this right\u2019 and with improv it\u2019s more freeing, \u2018I\u2019m just going to be up there and I\u2019m going to have a good time.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But everything hasn\u2019t always been fun and games for the group. They have faced their share of challenges.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dustin Aiken, a long-time member, committed suicide in August of 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe always loved improv. He loved laughing and making people laugh,\u201d said Garcia, who was Aiken\u2019s roommate. \u201cI attribute a lot of our growth and accomplishments to him.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Shortly after his death, the sketch group hosted a show in his honor. They also designed black leather bracelets with his initials and the phrase <\/span>Keep it Weird<\/span><\/i> inscribed on them, a motto he lived by.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The group has kept Aiken\u2019s memory alive by building their performances around two tenets he embodied: positivity and laughter.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
