Despite being cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Miami Film Festival<\/span><\/a> still doled out $150,000 in cash prizes to filmmakers who entered in the festival\u2019s competitions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Three awards were announced during the festival\u2019s run\u2014the Oolite Arts Miami Film Festival Poster Design Award, the Oolite Arts Miami Film Festival Trailer Award and the CinemaSlam.<\/span><\/p>\n

The remaining 12 winners were announced on March 23 through a press release.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some of the top award winners include: <\/span>When Liberty Burns<\/i><\/b>, <\/span><\/i>a historical film that documents Miami race riots in the \u201880s, that won the $30,000 Knight Made in MIA Feature Film Award; <\/span>La Llorona<\/i><\/b>, a drama film that uses Hispanic folklore to examine the atrocities that came out of the Guatemalan Civil War, that won <\/span>the <\/span>$40,000 Knight MARIMBAS<\/span> Award and <\/span>90 Minutes<\/i><\/b>, <\/b>a feature film that examines<\/span> contemporary Honduras through the culture\u2019s love for soccer, won the Toyota Narrative Feature Film Audience Award<\/span>.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

The international gathering, which attracts thousands of attendees, was cancelled on March 6 after six days of movies. It was scheduled to end on March 15.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe health and safety of our artists, audiences and employees necessitated the early cancellation,” said Jaie Laplante, who has served as MFF\u2019s executive director since 2010, in an interview with <\/span>The Reporter<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During the festival, 66 feature films, 42 short films and four master classes were presented at movie houses across Miami, including the Olympia Theater, Coral Gables Art Cinema, Tower Theatre and Silverspot Cinema.<\/p>\n

The shutdown canceled the viewing of 21 feature films, six short films and two master classes.<\/span><\/p>\n

The voting process for the categories remained the same, with the only difference being that deliberations happen virtually rather than in-person.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Films that weren\u2019t screened publicly were judged by a panel through virtual screenings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, the Documentary Achievement Award was not awarded because it requires voting to be done by an audience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To make up for that, the TOYOTA Feature Film Audience Award, which reviews narrative films, also included documentaries in the category. The winner<\/span>\u2014<\/span>90 Minutes<\/i><\/b>\u2014<\/span>was based on the 66 features that were screened before the cancellation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Prior to the closure, the festival gave awards for the Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Family Foundation Cinemaslam Competition, a program that awarded Florida students for their use of archival footage from the Wolfson Media Center in their films.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The first-place winner was <\/span>Celestial<\/span><\/i> by <\/span>Bruklyn Miller<\/b> from the New York Film Academy in South Beach. She received $7,500.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Four runner-ups received $5,000 each: <\/span>Metanoia<\/span><\/i> by <\/span>Ashley De Grandy <\/b>from MDC;\u00a0 Dessert by <\/span>Megan Tran<\/b> from New World School of the Arts; Caretaker by <\/span>Sam Wilder <\/b>and Wade in the Water: Drowning in Racism by <\/span>Cathleen Deen<\/b>\u2014both from the University of Miami.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

De Grandy\u2019s short film <\/span>Metanoia <\/span><\/i>also received the $500 Film Florida Sara Fuller Scholarship Award and the Cinemaslam Audience Award on March 7. In addition, eight other awardees received grants of $1,875 each to fund eight ongoing film projects that use the Wolfson Media Center\u2019s archival material.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pablo Larrain<\/b>, who directed the short film <\/span>Ema<\/span><\/i>, won The Oolite Arts Miami Film Festival Poster Design Award and Oolite Arts Miami Film Festival Trailer Award on March 6.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe share in the disappointment of everyone who could not participate in the Festival\u2019s final days, as they may have hoped to,\u201d Laplante said. \u201cWe are eager to resume our great programming when it is safe to do so.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
