{"id":19176,"date":"2020-05-22T08:33:49","date_gmt":"2020-05-22T12:33:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=19176"},"modified":"2021-05-22T10:29:31","modified_gmt":"2021-05-22T14:29:31","slug":"daca-student-graduates-from-upenn-law-school-aspires-to-tackle-immigration-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/daca-student-graduates-from-upenn-law-school-aspires-to-tackle-immigration-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"DACA Student Graduates From UPenn Law School, Aspires To Tackle Immigration Policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Fred Toney told Gustavo Cardona he should apply to <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tuskegee.edu\">Tuskegee University<\/a><\/span>, a historically black university, he couldn\u2019t believe the opportunity was real.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an undocumented immigrant from Colombia, Cardona didn\u2019t think he fit the bill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTigers come in more than one color,\u201d Toney, formerly the assistant director of academic advisement at North Campus and a 1982 Tuskegee alum, recalls telling Cardona.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Convinced he couldn&#8217;t afford a bachelor\u2019s degree, Tuskegee was the only university the North Campus political science alum applied to in 2015.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The risk paid off.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardona is one of 21 Miami Dade College alums who have been awarded the Tuskegee University Transfer Merit Scholarship since 2014. It pays full tuition and includes an $800 book voucher.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy motto in life has been pa\u2019 delante\u2014[it means] moving forward, keep it going,\u201d said Cardona, who earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in political science from Tuskegee in 2017. \u201cThat&#8217;s something that Latinos think, and it&#8217;s a good message to spread.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardona is living out that motto. He graduated from the law school at the <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.upenn.edu\">University of Pennsylvania<\/a><\/span> in May and hopes to create a better world for\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">undocumented immigrants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy dream is to be able to impact that space\u2014immigrant rights, criminal rights and everything related,\u201d Cardona said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 28-year-old was born in Cartago, Colombia in 1991. When he was seven, he arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York with his mother, Silvia Cardona.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They moved to Stamford, Connecticut with his second cousins.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen you&#8217;re an immigrant, you don&#8217;t have much,\u201d Cardona said. \u201cYou just go wherever you have family, wherever you have support.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While attending Stamford High School, he worked as a caddie for four years at the Midway Golf Club. It pays full tuition and includes an $800 book voucher.\u00a0PHOTO COURTESY OF GUSTAVO CARDONA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But life after high school became a trickier financial web.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He started as a full-time student at <a href=\"https:\/\/norwalk.edu\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Norwalk Community College<\/span><\/a> in Connecticut in September of 2010, but switched to part-time because he couldn\u2019t afford it. He dropped out a year later.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2011, after his mother suffered a nerve fracture at work attempting to lift something, they moved to a friend\u2019s house in Miami. Cardona\u2014who was 19 at the time\u2014immediately began working to save money for school.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardona worked as a subcontractor, installing curtains and making house repairs at hotels in Brickell and Miami Beach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/daca-students-remain-hopeful-amid-immigration-uncertainty\/\">he soon discovered his educational options were limited<\/a><\/span>. Most colleges and universities made him pay out-of-state fees because he didn\u2019t have a social\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">security number.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardona caught a break in 2012 when the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy came into effect. He was able to get a work permit and landed a job at Panera Bread. Two years later he started working as a bank teller at Wells Fargo.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That allowed the undocumented student to take classes at North and Wolfson Campus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI met some incredible people in Miami Dade [College] that helped me get where I am today,\u201d Cardona said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Undocumented students that graduate from a high school in Florida are eligible for in-state tuition at MDC, but since Cardona went to high school in Connecticut, he paid out-of-state tuition. That is almost four times the cost of in-state tuition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eventually, Toney helped him secure a scholarship that reduced his cost for a full load of classes to $900 per semester until he graduated in 2015.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGus is not risk-averse and he is open to the possibility,\u201d Toney said. \u201cGus is a dreamer who is not afraid to make his dreams come true.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When he left for Tuskegee University, Cardona transferred his position at Wells Fargo to a branch in Alabama,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but stayed active on campus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The undocumented student joined Pi Sigma Alpha, the national political science honors society, and was elected a senator. Cardona also created a pre-law program that allowed students to prepare for the Law School Admission Test and worked with history professor Lisa Bratton to study contracts that slaves had to sign to work for white landowners after they were freed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGustavo was very good about and very much wanted to make sure that the students coming up behind him were thoroughly prepared,\u201d said Tammy Laughlin, Cardona\u2019s political science professor at Tuskegee. \u201cIn helping others you are sharpening your own skills, and he saw that. [He has] very much a servant&#8217;s heart.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thierno Thiam, who chairs the department of history and political science, remembers Cardona for his drive and desire.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn all of those classes, it became quite clear that he was one of those who was cut out to do great because he had the intellectual capability,\u201d Thiam said. \u201cMost importantly, he has a big curiosity about essentially all kinds of aspects\u2014including the theory about the world, the curiosity about the legal system that we currently live in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After earning his bachelor\u2019s degree at Tuskegee, Cardona was accepted into the law school at UPenn. He quit his job to focus on his studies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his first year of law school, Cardona joined student government. Last year, he participated in a charity event organized by UPenn\u2019s boxing club to help the Boys &amp; Girls Club of Philadelphia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardona trained for a year to prepare for the event. He lost 20 pounds by running, cycling, sparring and working out at UPenn\u2019s gym.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was not about violence,\u201d Cardona said. \u201cIt was about fighting for what you believe in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On May 18, he graduated from UPenn with a Juris Doctor degree.
