{"id":1957,"date":"2015-11-24T10:39:51","date_gmt":"2015-11-24T15:39:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=1957"},"modified":"2021-07-01T12:14:01","modified_gmt":"2021-07-01T16:14:01","slug":"1957-2-access","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/1957-2-access\/","title":{"rendered":"Special Needs Students Strive In Higher Education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly 3,000 students college-wide benefit from ACCESS ( A Comprehensive Center for Excellent Student Services), the department in charge of assisting students with disabilities on campus. Institutions like Miami Dade College are required by law to provide auxiliary aids, substitutions, modifications, academic adjustments or waivers of requirements for admission for students with disabilities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrea Plunkett, ACCESS services director at North Campus, says that identifying students with disabilities can be a hard task, because students are not required to notify any of their disabilities to the College. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey don\u2019t have to come here,\u201d Plunkett said. \u201cThey may not take the opportunity to disclose.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If students choose to seek any auxiliary aids, they must provide documentation of their disability in order to obtain the aids. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Living with a disability makes those college students\u2019 experiences unique. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are two stories of students with disabilities portraying their distinct challenges and accomplishments<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Empowering Young People<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When North Campus student Brianda Belizario, 23, was born, her family had no clue she was deaf. They were confused that their baby didn\u2019t respond to their calls. No one in her family had been born deaf before. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coming from the Dominican Republic, her family wasn\u2019t aware of the resources available to Belizario at an early age such as American Sign Language education and interventive language tutoring. This led to her growing up without effectively communicating with her family, who only spoke Spanish at home. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Belizario saw the need to learn to speak even when she wasn\u2019t able to hear the phonetics of her words. Her family never adapted to her special needs. Up to this day, Belizario doesn\u2019t communicate well with her family, most of them don\u2019t speak English and she can\u2019t read lips in Spanish. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She now lives with her father, step-mother and a step-sister. Her biological mother lives in Brooklyn, New York where Belizario was born. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her father, an airplane technician, has learned to speak English to facilitate and interact with his daughter. Even though he attempted to learn ASL, he focused his energy on learning English to better adapt to the United States. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She goes home to a place that she can hardly identify with. Many of the family conversations are not conveyed to her because her family just doesn\u2019t know how to. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She is an outsider in her own home. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At school it is a different story, here she has found a support system that understands her. Her friends are all too familiar with the hardships that come with having a disability since they have one too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Belizario is the president of the American Sign Language club on campus. Her role as president has allowed her to grow and work with students on the social aspect of having a disability. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She obtains assistance from the ACCESS department by having an interpreter and notetaker that help her keep up with the pace of her math class. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Belizario and many of her friends don\u2019t like to talk about the fact that they receive ACCESS assistance or have disabilities. They say the stigma of a disability makes people see them as different.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jose Ubillus knows the reality of being a hard of hearing student and trying to excel in school. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ubillus admires Belizario\u2019s tenacity and endurance. He knows first-hand how hard it can be to integrate into the student body while having a disability. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShe has so much energy to come to school,\u201d said Ubillus about Belizarios. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to communicate \u2014 to pass the classes.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He said that self motivation is the key to success, not getting discouraged because a disability is getting in the way of accomplishing scholastic goals. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the obstacles that her deafness has created in her life, Belizario is full of enthusiasm and joy. She smiles when asked about her future, and her dreams. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI am pretty happy with who I am,\u201d Belizario said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She hopes to obtain her bachelor&#8217;s degree in early education so she can become an educator who focuses on students with disabilities. Belizario wants to empower young people, to let them know that they can accomplish anything they set their minds on. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Technology And Goal Oriented<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suspending himself from his seat with his arm on his wheelchair armrest, 26-year-old Kenry Maime erupts in laughter, shaking his motorized wheelchair when asked about his hobbies, like going to the mall with friends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He smiles and \u00a0responds that he dreams of one day being able to walk. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1960\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1960\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Disability1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1960\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Disability1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Inside_disability\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Disability1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Disability1-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1960\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">All Smiles: Kenry Maime, a North Campus student with cerebral palsy, poses for a picture before heading to his tutoring session. BRAYAN VAZQUEZ \\ THE REPORTER<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maime has cerebral palsy, which impairs his physical movement. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But his congenital disorder doesn\u2019t stop him from dreaming big and planning a future, he said. Maime aspires to be a computer scientist. He wants to graduate, obtain a job and start a family just like his peers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the age of seven, Maime had his first surgery on his knee caps. A doctor told his mother that he would never be able to walk. The news shattered his dreams of living a life without doctors, nurses and wheelchairs. Ever since then, his mother has devoted her life to his care. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maime has defied all expectations. He has been attending school for more than seven years, taking one class per semester. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A North Campus computer science major, \u00a0Maime \u00a0earned his GED in 2009 and went on to college right after. He was the first from his family to do so. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maime said his parents are extremely proud of all the things he has accomplished. There\u2019s a level of respect Miame obtains from his peers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">living proof that all things are accomplishable. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His ACCESS assigned tutor, Carmen Welsh, has been working with Maime for several years. She started helping him as a note-taker for one of Maime\u2019s classes. Ever since then the two have worked together, strengthening his academic performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe\u2019s a hard worker,\u201d Welsh said about Maime\u2019s character and performance in and outside of the classroom. \u201cHe works well with others, he is always looking out for them.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This self-awareness has allowed him to persevere in the most difficult situations, Welsh explained. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Welsh, he has shown professionalism and maturity in situations where able-bodied students negatively approach him and try to antagonize him. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe is able to shrug it off professionally,\u201d Welsh said. \u201cHe is comfortable with himself.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from being assigned a note-taker by the ACCESS department, Maime obtains other benefits from the department. He is helped during exams by having a scribe to write in answers during tests. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maime is looking into the future and the goals he has set for himself. He wants to leave a mark on this earth, to prove that he is capable of accomplishing anything he proposes to himself. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI work really hard to reach my goals: like my AA [degree],\u201d Maime said. \u201cI want it so bad.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly 3,000 students college-wide benefit from ACCESS ( A Comprehensive Center for Excellent Student Services), the department in charge of assisting students with disabilities on campus.
