The 17-member presidential search committee will meet on <\/span><b>Oct. 28 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to pick eight to 10 semifinalists and reconvene on <\/span><b>Nov. 5-6<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">narrowing the pool to four or five finalists.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The finalists will visit campus, make presentations to the community and interview with the BOT on <\/span><b>Nov. 12-13<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhile there is still a level of uncertainty surrounding the pandemic, we must remain flexible,\u201d said Trustee Nicole Washington, who chairs the search committee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the application deadline, candidates can continue to apply until a new president is selected, according to <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mdc.edu\/presidential-search\/docs\/MDCPresidentialProfile.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MDC\u2019s Presidential Profile<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The loophole could allow MDC to sneak in applicants at the last minute without public scrutiny, according to Judith A. Wilde, chief operating officer of the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University, who is conducting research on secret presidential searches.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a way to get around the [Florida] Sunshine Law,\u201d Wilde said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AGB Search\u2014the headhunting firm conducting the process for MDC\u2014will vet semi-finalists by searching their name on Google, social media and LexisNexis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assisting Roderick J. McDavis, the firm\u2019s managing principal, in the vetting process will be: associate managing principal <\/span><b>Melissa K. Trotta<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and executive search consultants <\/span><b>Carlos Hern\u00e1ndez<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Fred Moore<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A more thorough background check will be performed on the finalists. AGB Search will speak to references, current and former colleagues of the candidates. KENTECH\u2014a background check company\u2014will investigate their financial records, educational degrees, criminal records, court records and more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team will have less than a week to vet all of the finalists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe greatest problem with search firms is that they don\u2019t do very much of what we refer to, in the broad category of due diligence,\u201d Wilde said. \u201cIf you want a quick decision, when is that due diligence going to be done? Can it be done?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McDavis disagrees.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is really giving us as much time as, probably we\u2019ve ever had to do a search, quite frankly, because typically our searches take between four to six months,\u201d McDavis said. \u201cWe\u2019ve got more than sufficient time to recruit top candidates.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miami Dade College\u2019s fifth permanent<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> president is expected to start in January of 2021.
