She was scheduled to perform shows across the globe as part of Lover Fest, a concert tour that celebrates her seventh studio album, <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/1NAmidJlEaVgA3MpcPFYGq\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lover<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (released in August 2019). She was also going to be the <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/glastonburyfestivals.co.uk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2020 Glastonbury Festival<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s first female headliner since 2016<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As events were postponed or cancelled due to the coronavirus, Swift didn\u2019t waste her time\u2014she instead wrote her next album.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/2fenSS68JI1h4Fo296JfGr\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Folklore<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, her eight studio album, was unexpectedly <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CC-9usjDzUw\/?utm_source=ig_embed\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> only 16 hours before it dropped on July 24 at midnight. According to Swift, she would have normally waited to release the sixteen-track album (which includes a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seventeenth bonus track) but the pandemic reminded her that \u201cnothing is guaranteed.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout the years, Swift\u2019s music genres have evolved. Her first album, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taylor Swift<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2000) had a small-town country sound. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fearless<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2008), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speak Now<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2010) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2012) mix country with pop. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1989<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2014), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reputation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2017) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lover<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2019) leave country music behind and indulge fully into pop.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Folklore<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> explores indie folk and alternative rock\u2014and I\u2019m here for it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swift wrote the album during her four months of self-isolation. She collaborated with multiple artists, such as rock guitarist from The Nationals Aaron Dessner (who co-wrote and produced 11 of the album\u2019s 16 songs), the Indie folk band Bon Iver (who co-wrote <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exile<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the album\u2019s fourth track)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and long-time collaborator Jack Antonoff, who sings for pop band Bleachers and plays the guitar and drums for indie rock band Fun.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/taylorswift13\/status\/1286513561553047557\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">personal essay<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that interprets <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Folklore<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Swift explains that the album is written from different perspectives\u2014her own, people she knows, people she never met, and people she wishes she hadn\u2019t met. That theme can be seen throughout the album.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Last Great American Dynasty<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seems to tell the story of Rebekah Harkness, a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">famous heiress from St. Louis who once owned Swift\u2019s Rhode Island coastal mansion. The lyrics explain that Swift is done trying to hold a \u201cgood girl\u201d image or caring about what other people think about her.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The freeing lyrics and carefree attitude might refer to Swift\u2019s contentious battle with record executive Scooter Braun. Swift claimed that Braun acquired her former record label, Big Machine Records\u2014along with the rights to Swift\u2019s songs\u2014without her knowledge. That led her to sign <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with Republic Records last November, leaving the problem behind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardigan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Betty<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">August<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> all circulate around a fictional teenage love-triangle. They represent the perspectives of Betty, James (her partner) and his lover respectively. Specific lines like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardigan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s \u201cyou\u2019d be standing on my front porch light\u201d and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Betty<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s \u201cI\u2019m here on your doorstep\u201d link one song to the other, creating an entanglement like that of a love-triangle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seven<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has a mellow sound accompanied by daunting yet beautiful lyrics, which seem to talk about Swift\u2019s youth. The song speaks about having a childhood friend with a bad home life, but being too innocent to understand that she couldn&#8217;t fix her friend\u2019s situation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mad Woman<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tells the tale of a misfit widow who is getting revenge on the town that cast her out. Some connect it with Swift\u2019s personal problems with Braun and Kanye West, who dissed Swift in his song <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Famous<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whatever overlapping meaning the songs in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Folklore<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hold, it is undeniable that Taylor never fails to impress. Listening to this album made me remember why I first started listening to music, and why I will always support her.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Folklore<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showcases Swift\u2019s great storytelling ability. The lyrics will stick with you. This album\u2019s soothing and pensive tone differ from her usual joyous pop albums, but it\u2019s one of her best.
