It\u2019s not easy saying this as a music and concert lover, but the music industry is not a safe place for a lot of female artists\u2014especially underage ones.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One example<\/span>: Burger Records, <\/span><\/i>an American independent record label in Fullerton, California.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Several allegations of misconduct and sexual abuse have surfaced after an anonymous Instagram account entitled <\/span>Lured By Burger Records<\/span><\/a><\/span> accused the label of sexual misconduct.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It included stories of <\/span>minors lured into back rooms, storage sheds and tour vans. The stories <\/span>led<\/span> Burger Records<\/span><\/i> to announce plans to restructure the company <\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0to address a \u201cculture of toxic masculinity.\u201d Bohrman eventually announced on July 22 that the label would instead shut down,<\/span> according to Pitchfork<\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Recently, several other female musicians have come forward with their stories. On July 20, Lydia Night\u2014lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of punk rock band <\/span>The Regrettes<\/span><\/i>\u2014said <\/span>SWMRS <\/span><\/i>Drummer Joey Armstrong<\/span> emotionally abused and assaulted her when they dated. At the time, she was 16 and he was 22.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Shortly afterward, Armstrong <\/span>responded to Night<\/span><\/a><\/span> on SWMRS\u2019 Instagram account. In the statement, he didn\u2019t address the fact that he was grooming a child.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Last month, the band released a <\/span>statement<\/span><\/a><\/span> supporting those that come forward with sexual assault stories. It shows how the band\u2019s activism is merely for show.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Arrow de Wilde, lead singer of rock band <\/span>Starcrawler, <\/span><\/i>said when her band was on tour with the <\/span>Growlers<\/span><\/i>, the band hired a stripper in Australia to give her a lap dance without her consent, which she believes was planned.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A day later, lead vocalist Brooks Nielsen <\/span>posted an apology on the band\u2019s Instagram account<\/span><\/a><\/span>. It\u2019s disgusting to see bands releasing these statements because they got caught, not because they\u2019re actually sorry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Unfortunately, this is common throughout the field.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Musician R. Kelly married 15-year-old singer Aaliyah in 1994 when he was 27. He\u2019s also been convicted for transporting underage girls over state lines for illegal sexual purposes and child pornography, according to ABC News.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These types of issues have always been a problem in the music industry. It\u2019s an uncomfortable topic\u2014especially when powerful figures are involved\u2014but we have to start a dialogue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even if you don\u2019t listen to these bands, no genre is clean of this behavior. This is not cancel culture either. Cancel culture will never cause the same amount of harm that someone sexually assaulting another person does.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Before saying that separating art from the artist isn\u2019t harmful, realize that many artists use their music to feed their ego.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Music can hold a lot of personal significance for people, but that doesn\u2019t mean we should actively support an artist if they abuse their power. The \u201csep<\/span>arating art from the artist\u201d argument is just a way to avoid holding musicians accountable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

People love to preach their support for abuse survivors, but are the first ones to support their favorite artist when they apologize for a sexual harassment allegation. It\u2019s our job as music fans to demand change in the music industry and hold artists accountable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Women can also be the perpetrators, but I am shedding light on the abuse in the music industry because it\u2019a a male dominated industry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To artists, managers, and labels: these young fans look up to you. It is your job to listen and make them feel safe. Stick to sexual partners your own age. If you’re not sure how old someone is, they\u2019re most likely too young for you. Take accountability, be responsible and do better.<\/span><\/p>\n

The conversation doesn\u2019t end here. There is a lot of work to be done because abuse in the music industry will continue to happen. This article will never amount to the amount of pain victims have had to go through. I will continue to educate myself and show my greatest recognition to every brave person who has come forward to share their stories.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
