With coronavirus cases continuing to surge in South Florida, Steven Haas wanted to make sure local restaurants mitigate the crisis by staying in touch with their customers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Haas\u2014who graduated from North Campus in 1977\u2014is the founder of <\/span>Miami Eats<\/span><\/i><\/span>,<\/span><\/a> a free website that shows people which restaurants offer outdoor dining, delivery or take-out services.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCustomers now don’t have to call every single restaurant to know,\u201d Haas said. \u201cThis has made it as easy as possible, one website for everyone to locate what restaurant is actually open and doing take-out and delivery. Prior to this you had to go online or call each restaurant individually to see if they were opened for business.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

More than 1,200 restaurants are featured on the website,<\/span> which was created in partnership with <\/span>the Great Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau.<\/span> The site offers information about everything <\/span>from fast food to high-end fine dining.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Haas was born in Queens in 1958. He emigrated to Miami when he was 14 with his parents.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c[New York] was a scary place to be in,\u201d Haas said. \u201cA lot of ongoing mugging would occur and we had enough, my parents knew it was time to leave.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

After graduating from Miami Beach Senior High School, Haas earned an associate\u2019s degree in marketing from North Campus in 1977. Two years later, he graduated from Florida International University with a bachelor\u2019s degree in marketing and accounting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He was torn between a career in marketing or accounting. Haas chose to follow in his family\u2019s footsteps and enter the restaurant industry. His parents, Philip and Harriet Haas, owned two restaurants in Miami Beach\u2014<\/span>The Normandy Coffee Shop<\/span><\/i> on 71 St. in Miami Beach from 1975-1978 <\/span>and <\/span>Sam\u2019s Deli<\/span><\/i>, a small coffee shop known today as <\/span>Mi Colombia<\/span><\/i>, on 163 St. in North Miami Beach from 1978-1986.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI did not want to sit behind a desk,\u201d Haas said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He got his first job in the industry in 1979. Haas<\/span> prepared and presented food to guests at <\/span>The 41 Club<\/span><\/i>\u2014an exclusive nightclub <\/span>owned by <\/span>The Forge<\/span><\/i> restaurant in Miami Beach.<\/span><\/p>\n

After the club closed later that year, Haas managed <\/span>The Forge<\/span><\/i>. He met celebrities like actress Elizabeth Taylor, musicians Madonna and Prince, actor Paul Newman and comedian Joan Rivers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Eleven years later, Haas wanted a change. He became the food and beverage director of <\/span>The Mayfair at Coconut Grove<\/span><\/i> in 1990. Two years later, he became co-owner of a grill and several bars at the Sheraton Bal Harbour.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI entered the hotel industry to see what was on the other side and experience what it’s like to work outside of the restaurant business, [but] I did not enjoy it,\u201d Haas said. \u201cIt was a real cut-throat industry. Everyone is striving to be a general manager. Everyone is taking credit for everything. It wasn’t for me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Eventually, Haas went back to the restaurant business.<\/span><\/p>\n

He co-owned two restaurants\u2014Soyka Restaurant and News Caf\u00e9, both located in Miami Beach, on and off from 1995 through 2010.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Between 1998 and 2010, Haas was also the general manager for several restaurants under the China Grill Management System\u2014including China Grill, Tuscan Steak, Red Square and Social at the Sagamore Hotel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After leaving China Grill Management in 2010, he opened <\/span>City Hall The Restaurant<\/span><\/i>. Located at 2004 Biscayne Blvd. in the Arts & Entertainment District, the restaurant served American comfort food. It closed in 2016 because they had problems with the landlord.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe was selling the property and I was in the way,\u201d Haas said. \u201cUnfortunately, I went to court and lost the battle. A very hard lesson learned.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Haas is also revered for being a leader in the restaurant industry.<\/span><\/p>\n

After 9\/11 he created <\/span>Miami Spice<\/span><\/i>\u2014a two-month annual restaurant showcase\u2014to exhibit Miami\u2019s diverse cuisine and world-renowned chefs. He feared that many of his employees would be laid off because people weren\u2019t frequenting restaurants at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2009, Haas became the first Board Chairman of the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau from the restaurant sector. He currently serves as vice chair.<\/span><\/p>\n

Haas is also the executive director of hospitality for the Centerplate Miami Beach Convention Center, a member of the Pillar Trustees Board for the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce and a former chairman of the Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2014, Haas was inducted into the MDC Alumni Hall of Fame for his leadership and impact on Miami’s culinary industry. He is also a Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award recipient and Travel and Tourism Hall of Fame inductee.<\/span><\/p>\n
