The Florida primary elections on Aug. 18 saw the state\u2019s largest primary turnout in 18 years.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

More than 28% of Floridians cast their ballots for the mayoral, congressional and state attorney elections. Miami-Dade County didn\u2019t fall short, with more than 415,000 voters and a turnout of 27%.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s everything you need to know about the results:<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Miami-Dade County Mayoral Election<\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Miami-Dade County mayoral race featured six candidates\u2014commissioners <\/span>Daniella Levine Cava<\/a><\/span><\/strong>, <\/span> Xavier Suarez <\/b>and Esteban Bovo<\/b><\/a><\/span><\/span>; ex-mayor <\/span>Alex Penelas<\/b>; and newcomers <\/span>Ludmilla Domond<\/b> and <\/span>Monique Barley<\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since no candidate earned a majority of the votes, the two with the most votes\u2014Bovo with 29.5% and Levine Cava with 28.6%\u2014will face off in a runoff election on Nov. 3.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bovo emphasizes staunch fiscal policies and law and order\u2014he promises to not raise taxes and expand rail service. He has been the representative for District 13, which includes Hialeah and Miami Lakes, since 2011.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a unifying campaign and we are going to work hard to gain the trust and vote of all,\u201d said Mark Gomez, Bovo\u2019s campaign manager. \u201cNovember won\u2019t be easy but we are convinced that the message resonates with the residents of this county.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Levine Cava hopes to become Miami-Dade County\u2019s first female mayor. She advocates for affordable housing, women\u2019s issues, racial equality, climate change, gun violence and social justice. She has represented District 8, which runs from Homestead to West Kendall, since 2014.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTuesday night\u2019s victory was a testament to what we can do when we work together and organize our communities toward a vision they can trust,\u201d said Manny Orozco, Levine Cava\u2019s deputy campaign manager. \u201cCommissioner Daniella is prepared to bring about much-needed transformative change as our next mayor.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Florida U.S. House Primary Elections<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

There was also a Republican primary election on Aug. 18, where candidates competed for the Florida seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.<\/span><\/p>\n

Florida\u2019s 26th congressional district, located in the northeast corner of Miami-Dade County, saw Mayor <\/span>Carlos Gim\u00e9nez<\/b> defeat firefighter <\/span>Omar Blanco<\/b>. Gimenez will face incumbent <\/span>Debbie Mucarsel-Powell<\/b> in the November elections.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mucarsel-Powell assumed office in January 2019. She champions gun safety, gender equality, climate change, the protection of immigration, and the expansion of healthcare and education.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gimenez has been the county\u2019s mayor since November 2016. His campaign focuses on tax cuts, public safety programs that combat crime, and improving the county\u2019s transportation system.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Broadcast journalist <\/span>Maria Elvira Salazar<\/b> won the race in Florida\u2019s 27th congressional district, which encompasses the rest of the county. She defeated <\/span>Juan Fiol<\/b>, a real estate broker and owner, and <\/span>Raymond Molina<\/b>, a real estate developer and mortgage banker. Salazar now faces incumbent <\/span>Donna Shalala<\/b> in November.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Shalala has been in office since January 2019. She advocates for climate change, job creation, gun control, universal healthcare, women\u2019s rights, better transportation, and the protection of immigration.<\/span><\/p>\n

Salazar seeks to support veterans, increase national security and public safety, reform the immigration and healthcare systems, and cut taxes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Miami-Dade State Attorney Elections<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

In the Miami-Dade state attorney race incumbent <\/span>Katherine Fernandez Rundle<\/a> <\/span><\/strong>was re-elected to her eighth term in office after winning 61% of the votes. She defeated <\/span>Melba Pearson<\/b>, who served as the county\u2019s assistant state attorney for more than 15 years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fernandez Rundle has been Miami-Dade’s state attorney since 1993. Throughout her career, she has created a child support enforcement office, a human trafficking task force, and a veterans court.<\/span><\/p>\n
