{"id":21817,"date":"2020-05-15T10:00:23","date_gmt":"2020-05-15T14:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=21817"},"modified":"2021-03-01T15:58:33","modified_gmt":"2021-03-01T20:58:33","slug":"five-mdc-mens-basketball-players-receive-athletic-scholarships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/five-mdc-mens-basketball-players-receive-athletic-scholarships\/","title":{"rendered":"Five MDC Men\u2019s Basketball Players Receive Athletic Scholarships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A quintet of sophomores on the <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcathletics.com\/sports\/mbkb\/index\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miami Dade College men\u2019s basketball team <\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">received athletic scholarships following the 2019-20 season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forward <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/basketball-team-off-to-strong-start-with-high-octane-offense\/\"><b>Gus Okafor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will go to Southeastern Louisiana University, wing <\/span><b>Elton Walker<\/b><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Austin Peay State University, wing <\/span><b>Randy Rickards<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Wilmington University, wing <\/span><b>Marques Watson <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to Manhattan College and forward\/wing <\/span><b>Jordan White<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the University of Fort Lauderdale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Okafor, who averaged eight rebounds and 12.6 points per game last season, was named to the Florida College System Activities Association First-Team All-Southern Conference. He was one of the best players on the team, ranking second in points (364) and rebounds (232).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I had a great time at Miami Dade [College]. I will miss my coaches and teammates,&#8221; Okafor said. &#8220;[MDC] prepared me mentally to help me succeed at the next level.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watson, who is originally from Brooklyn, New York, will be returning to his hometown to play at Manhattan College. Sharks head basketball coach Kevin Ledoux described him as a versatile player with good defensive skills. Watson averaged 9.8 points and 2.7 assists per game for the Sharks last season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rickards averaged 11 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. He ranked second in steals (41) on the team and fourth in points (307).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walker, who received no offers after graduating from Miami Killian Senior High School in 2018, saw MDC as an opportunity to boost his career. As the only returning player on last year\u2019s squad, he finished his tenure at MDC with 692 points, 349 rebounds and 82 steals in two seasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I had to really work hard to get to the next level,\u201d Walker said. \u201cI would tell any other athletes in my situation that they should be grateful for any opportunity they get and make the most of it. Miami Dade gave me that opportunity.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watson, Rickards and Walker were named to the Second-Team All-Southern Conference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">White was the last player to receive a scholarship. He averaged two rebounds and 4.5 points per game last year in limited action time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We are happy to have helped five young men move on and continue playing the game they love,&#8221; Ledoux said.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A quintet of sophomores on the Miami Dade College men\u2019s basketball team received athletic scholarships following the 2019-20 season.
