{"id":22107,"date":"2020-09-08T16:30:19","date_gmt":"2020-09-08T20:30:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=22107"},"modified":"2020-11-15T17:42:15","modified_gmt":"2020-11-15T22:42:15","slug":"miami-book-fair-goes-virtual-this-year-with-free-netflix-style-website","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/miami-book-fair-goes-virtual-this-year-with-free-netflix-style-website\/","title":{"rendered":"Miami Book Fair Goes Virtual This Year With Free Netflix-Style Website"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultra, the Calle Ocho Music Festival, the Doral Food\u00a0 &amp; Wine Festival and the Miami Beach Pride Festival were all canceled or postponed this year because of the coronavirus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Could the 38th annual Miami Book Fair be next?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nope.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The book lovers extravaganza known for its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/miami-book-fair-stirs-literary-pot-in-downtown-miami\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">colorful pop-up tent<\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">s <\/span><\/strong><\/a>that invade downtown Miami with hundreds of authors found a creative alternative\u2014a free online event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s going to be an online experience like a Netflix-style website,\u201d said Lissette Mendez, the MBF\u2019s program director.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Book Fair, which will run from Nov. 15-22 with a mix of prerecorded and live-streamed events, will feature more than 171 English-language and 80 Spanish-language authors from places like Latin America, Haiti, Canada, and the United States.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They include activist <\/span><b>Erin Brockovich<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Superman&#8217;s Not Coming: Our National Water Crisis and What We the People Can Do About It<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; former <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Times <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">foreign correspondent <\/span><b>Anthony DePalma<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cubans: Ordinary Lives in Extraordinary Times<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; American journalist and political satirist <\/span><b>P.J. O\u2019Rourke<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who wrote <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Cry from the Far Middle: Dispatches from a Divided Land<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; history professor <\/span><b>Yanela G. McLeod<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Miami Times: The Fight for Equality: Race, Sport, and the Black Press, 1948-1958<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; and <\/span><b>Peniel E. Joseph<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Haitian American historian and author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sword and the Shield: The Revolutionary Lives of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Award-winning Canadian author Margaret Atwood known for her novel, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Handmaid\u2019s Tale,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will kick-off the festivities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All the events will be hosted on a new <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/miamibookfaironline.com\/\">website<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that works similar to a streaming service: attendees sign in using their email and create a password to open a list of programs, panels and conversations that allow the user to create a custom page of events they want to attend. When the viewer clicks on an event, the link takes you to <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.crowdcast.io\/en\/articles\/651701-attendee-quick-reference-guide\">Crowdcast<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014a live video platform for webinars that looks similar to YouTube.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The website allows prospective attendees sign up for email updates about the MBF and will eventually allow them to receive author lineup reminders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mendez said that although the Book Fair won\u2019t be on campus, attendees can expect the same top-notch program as always.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis event is going to be exactly the same,\u201d Mendez said. \u201cWe will be having the same kind of authors, and a variety of topics and genres for all ages.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staples such as the popular <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evenings With<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> author series and live Q and A sessions will go on virtually. Speakers will include something for everyone with screenwriters, poets, journalists, and cartoonists slated to participate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And although the Street Fair won\u2019t be happening, there will be Street Fair booths on the website and a marketplace so attendees can buy books and authors\u2019 merchandise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sofia Ramirez, a sophomore at Kendall Campus who attended last year\u2019s festival, thinks that going virtual was the right move.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs avid readers, we need some sort of literary entertainment which the Book Fair provides,\u201d Ramirez said. \u201cIt allows a wider audience from all over the world to attend this event and to visit the different speakers and events.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not having the Book Fair was never an option, Mendez said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe believe strongly in the conversations about the different topics and points of view and making sure that kind of program and information has a way out into the world,\u201d Mendez said. \u201cThat is very important to us so after consulting with the team, there was no will at all whatsoever for canceling the Miami Book Fair.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ultra, the Calle Ocho Music Festival, the Doral Food\u00a0 &amp; Wine Festival and the Miami Beach Pride Festival were all canceled or postponed this year because of the coronavirus.
