{"id":22655,"date":"2020-09-25T10:02:12","date_gmt":"2020-09-25T14:02:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=22655"},"modified":"2021-05-23T17:39:59","modified_gmt":"2021-05-23T21:39:59","slug":"mdc-baseball-player-returns-one-year-after-cancer-almost-took-his-left-arm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/mdc-baseball-player-returns-one-year-after-cancer-almost-took-his-left-arm\/","title":{"rendered":"MDC Baseball Player Returns One Year After Cancer Almost Took His Left Arm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bryan Sanjurjo sat pensively in a room at the <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/umiamihealth.org\/en\/sylvester-comprehensive-cancer-center\">Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as he awaited the diagnosis of a baseball-sized lump that had formed under his left armpit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sanjurjo doesn\u2019t remember much about that day in September of 2019, but the news he got, crushed him like a Gerrit Cole fastball to the face.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Test results determined that he had stage II liposarcoma, a rare type of cancer that develops in fatty tissue.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His left arm, the one he had used to catch baseballs since he was four years old, might have to be amputated too, they said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI felt devastated,\u201d said Sanjurjo, who had completed his freshman baseball season at Miami Dade College before cancer interrupted his life.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One year later<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after 30 chemotherapy sessions in Miami, 30 radiotherapy sessions in Puerto Rico, and a four-hour-long surgery at SCCC<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">his cancer is in remission.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sanjurjo is back on the baseball field at Miami Dade College fighting for a roster spot on the Sharks\u2019 baseball team. His left arm survived as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think he&#8217;s only gonna be better,\u201d said Sharks Head Baseball Coach <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/sharks-tab-former-player-to-lead-baseball-team-as-new-head-coach\/\">Adrian Morales<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>,<\/strong> <\/span>who was an assistant coach on the team, when Sanjurjo was a freshman. \u201cHe&#8217;s gonna be stronger mentally. He&#8217;s gonna get stronger physically. DAVID BATISTA \/ THE REPORTER<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sanjurjo was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 2000. When he was four, his father, Neftali Sanjurjo, encouraged him to play little league baseball for the Legends de Juncos. He attended high school at the Carlos Beltran Baseball <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Academy in a small town in northern Puerto Rico.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2016, he noticed a small ball of fat growing under his left armpit. After getting an MRI during an annual medical checkup, doctors said it was lipoma\u2014a benign tumor of fatty tissue that forms below the skin\u2014and it didn\u2019t require surgery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was brought to our attention because it looked odd,\u201d Neftali recalled. \u201cWe checked it annually.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trusting the initial diagnosis, Sanjurjo continued his life as usual.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In August of 2018, he received a scholarship to play at MDC. As a freshman, he batted .284 and had 20 RBI while playing shortstop and outfield in 32 games.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite his success that year, Sanjurjo played with discomfort. The lump that had formed under his left armpit when he was 16 years old was growing. That summer he returned to Puerto Rico to have it removed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He visited multiple doctors in San Juan, who ordered CT scans and MRIs to determine the reason behind the growth. Doctors discussed the possibility that Sanjurjo had liposarcoma, but results came back inconclusive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe went to like four different doctors because there were no specialists in Puerto Rico,\u201d Neftali said. \u201cOne of the doctors advised us to go to the United States for [Bryan\u2019s] well-being.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Running out of options, Sanjurjo\u2019s parents took him back to Miami to meet with Dr. Jonathan Trent, a sarcoma specialist at the University of Miami Healthcare System\u2019s SCCC.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A biopsy confirmed what they dreaded\u2014it was cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Road To Recovery<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Oct. 18\u2014the same day as his father\u2019s birthday\u2014Sanjurjo started chemotherapy sessions with Dr. Trent. The original plan was to complete four sessions that lasted from Monday through Friday every three weeks. However, after the tumor didn\u2019t shrink much, they added two more sessions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The procedures took a toll on Sanjurjo. He vomited often, suffered persistent stomach aches, and lost his hair and 14 pounds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI didn\u2019t feel like myself,\u201d Sanjurjo said. \u201cI felt lazy. I didn\u2019t want to do anything.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But he never felt alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sanjurjo\u2019s parents and his grandmother, Maria Luisa Qui\u00f1ones, took turns traveling to Miami to be by his side. His father often left Miami at 5 a.m. on flights to Puerto Rico so he could get to his job as a salesman for Menaco Corporation, a cleaning products company, by 9 a.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When he felt better, Sanjurjo attended some of the Sharks\u2019 practices and games. On other occasions, he spent days with his former roommates, Juan Marcano and Ediel Freytes-Pantoja, playing Playstation 4 and watching National Basketball Association and Major League Baseball games on TV.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe didn\u2019t try to talk about what he had,\u201d Marcano said. \u201cWe talked about other things. I think that helped him a lot.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Beating Cancer<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sanjurjo completed chemotherapy in late February, weeks before the COVID-19 outbreak shut things down in Miami. Three months later, he underwent a four-hour surgery at SCCC to remove most of the tumor. Doctors left parts of the tumor untouched to avoid major complications like mobility and sensibility loss. He needed radiotherapy to eradicate the remnants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In July, he underwent the first of 30 radiotherapy sessions in Puerto Rico. A month later, he finished his last radiotherapy and his cancer was in remission.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe\u2019s an inspirational story,\u201d said Sanjurjo\u2019s mother, Jennifer Barbosa. \u201cThings happen for a reason and thank God Bryan is perfectly healthy now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During his last months of treatment, Sanjurjo started a strict workout regime with his personal trainer, Arnold Moreno, to regain his physical conditioning. They met four times a week at Atlas Athletic Performance\u2014Moreno\u2019s gym in San Juan\u2014for weightlifting sessions and did pull-ups, push-ups, ab exercises, and muscle stretching exercises using power bands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe never lost his focus,\u201d Moreno said. \u201cIf I had to use one word to describe him, it would be consistency.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hard work and commitment paid off.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two months after the surgery, Sanjurjo regained 12 of the 14 pounds he had lost. On Sep. 15, sporting a five-inch scar that stretches from his chest to his left armpit and a newfound appreciation for life, he took batting practice for the first time since he was diagnosed with cancer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a part of my life that\u2019s behind me,\u201d Sanjurjo said while recounting what he had been through this past year. \u201cI feel proud because I was able to beat it.
