PICTURES<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lost River<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it was announced that Ryan Gosling would be making his directorial debut telling a story of an underwater town and monsters, my first thought was, \u2018Awesome.\u2019 But when the film premiered at Cannes this past May, reactions were anything but. Many cited a Gosling incapable of separating his directorial flourishes from the influencers they originated from, such as David Lynch and Nicolas Winding Refn. While the negativity surrounding the film is undesirable, I remain hopeful. Universal adoration isn\u2019t something polarizing works often call home. Refn\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only God Forgives <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and Ridley Scott\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Counselor <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were both annihilated by critics, and they ended up being two of my favorite 2014 films. Outside of the paper, he\u2019s directed two films, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">London Boulevard <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and now the desert thriller <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mojave<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. David Ayer (who struck gold in 2001 with his screenplay for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Training Day<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) has written and directed some hits and misses, but his work is almost always entertaining. It wasn\u2019t until 2012\u2019s intense cop drama <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">End of Watch<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that I really took to Ayer and made sure to follow his future work. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sabotage <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">followed (and stumbled) earlier this year, but like Ayer\u2019s other blunders, I had fun with it. Now his second film of the year is on the rise, the World War II tank drama <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fury<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, starring Brad Pitt, Logan Lerman, Shia LaBeouf, Michael Pe\u00f1a and Jon Bernthal. This thing looks really great; it could be Ayer\u2019s best work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Synopsis: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">April, 1945. As the Allies make their final push in the European Theatre, a battle-hardened army sergeant named Wardaddy commands a Sherman tank and her five-man crew on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. Scott has taken risks lately with films like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prometheus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Counselor<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, mortality tales which beguiled and perplexed the world but did wonders for me. In a 2012 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Playboy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> interview, Quentin Tarantino spoke about how directors typically don\u2019t get better as they get older. \u201cI\u2019m on a journey that needs to have an end and not be about me trying to get another job,\u201d he said. \u201cEven if it\u2019s old and I\u2019m washed up, I\u2019d still want to do it. I want this artistic journey to have a climax. I really enjoyed Miller\u2019s last two (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Capote<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moneyball<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and have high expectations for this. Mark Ruffalo is always fine, but my attention is focused on Channing Tatum and Steve Carell, who respectively play wrestler Mark Schultz and paranoid schizophrenic, multimillionaire sponsor John du Pont. From <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step Up <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to Soderbergh, Tatum has really grown over the years, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foxcatcher <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seems like it\u2019ll be one of the most notable marks in his filmography. The same goes for Carell, who\u2019s left his comedic comforts for the creepy and unsettling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Synopsis: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on the true story of Mark Schultz, an Olympic wrestler whose relationship with sponsor John du Pont and brother Dave Schultz would lead to unlikely circumstances; <\/span><b>Directed by <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bennett Miller; <\/span><b>Screenplay by <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">E. As soon as the track hits, I\u2019m transported; and then there\u2019s Jeremy Renner\u2019s (who I like a lot) top billing. He\u2019s been in the business for about 20 years but didn\u2019t see real success until the past seven. (2008\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hurt Locker <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">being his notable splash.) Since then I\u2019ve enjoyed pretty much everything he\u2019s done; even <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hansel &amp; Gretel: Witch Hunters<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is forgettable but brisk fun. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kill the Messenger <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has real potential to be great.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Synopsis: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A reporter becomes the target of a vicious smear campaign that drives him to the point of suicide after he exposes the CIA\u2019s role in arming Contra rebels in Nicaragua and importing cocaine into California. The two parts were then edited together in the form of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Them<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which saw Cannes this year and will see theaters in September. (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Him <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will also be released, in select art house cinemas in October.) The trailer for Dan Gilroy\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nightcrawler<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an absolute wonder and one of my favorites of the year. In a small piece I wrote on the film last month, I talked about the entrancing sounds found in the preview.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Set to CSS\u2019 White Lies-Ladytron offspring <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faith in Love<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this trailer is a shining example of how powerful a brilliantly placed song can be,\u2019 I said. \u2018Stern piano chords open the preview and build towards a cathartic crescendo of subtle electronics and distant voices that complement the film\u2019s apparent theme of obsession.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twenty pounds lighter for the role, Jake Gyllenhaal plays a manic, freelance journalist traversing the seedy underworld of Los Angeles in his red Challenger SRT8 392, photographing grisly crime scenes along the way. Even though Gyllenhaal was nominated back in 2006 for his work in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brokeback Mountain<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he\u2019s always seemed like the silent assassin of the industry, continually giving strong performances while managing to evade the attention of most. To say that the novel\u2019s loopy narrative is a tough thing to adapt is an understatement. Even with Flynn penning the screenplay herself and dark man David Fincher at the helm, this will be no easy feat. But I\u2019m confident it\u2019ll be great and more interested in seeing how they\u2019ll make it great versus how they could screw it up. Thorne. By 2007 it was readying for a screenplay adaptation by Jonah Nolan, brother of Christopher Nolan. Steven Spielberg was considering directing. Impressively and admirably, Jonah spent four years at Caltech studying relativity while putting together the script in order to further his knowledge on the film\u2019s topic. Here we are in 2014 with the finished product, directed by Christopher Nolan. I haven\u2019t anticipated a movie this much in quite some time, and I think it has something to do with the unlimited possibilities of such a grandiose piece of science fiction.
