The Miami Dade College men\u2019s basketball team posted an 18-11 record last year<\/span>\u2014<\/span>Kevin Ledoux\u2019s best season since he was tabbed as head coach of the Sharks in 2016<\/span>\u2014<\/span> but this year\u2019s squad returns only three players and features 11 new faces.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The revamped team includes three transfers: wing <\/span>Denari Garrett<\/b> from South Georgia Technical College, wing <\/span>Ciaran Sandy<\/b> from the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts, and guard <\/span>Jakob Medina<\/b> from Southeast Missouri State University.<\/span><\/p>\n

It also features freshmen guards <\/span>Khalil Shaheed<\/b>,<\/span> Jordan Brown<\/b>,<\/span> Kemari Brown <\/b>and<\/span> Alex Sanchez<\/b>;<\/span> wings <\/span>Jyre McCloud<\/b>, <\/span>Josh Reid<\/b> and <\/span>Dashaun Joseph<\/b>; and forward<\/span> Kyin Healey.<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m very confident in all of them,\u201d Ledoux said. \u201cThey\u2019re all good players, very good student-athletes and they are very coachable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite losing two of the team\u2019s top performers\u2014forward <\/span>Gus Okafor<\/b><\/span><\/a> (12.6 points and eight rebounds per game) and wing<\/span> Elton Walker<\/b><\/span><\/a> (12.2 points and 6.6 rebounds per game)\u2014Ledoux is confident his young team will play with cohesion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe chemistry is tremendous,\u201d Ledoux said. \u201cThey all care about each other. They all believe in each other. They all get along off the court together, and they just see it as one big unit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Last year, the team averaged 88.2 points and 41.2 rebounds per game but struggled to keep that pace in conference play. In 12 Southern Conference games, the Sharks scored fewer than 80 points on five occasions. That contributed to an unspectacular 5-7 conference record and a third place finish.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ledoux said last year\u2019s team lacked leadership. Sophomores <\/span>Victor Hart <\/b><\/span><\/a>(forward) and <\/span>Jerome Johnson <\/b>(point guard) could help fill that void.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hart had a breakout season last year. He led the team in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots. He averaged 16.6 points and 9.3 rebounds per game and had 30 blocks on the season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The team also returns shooting guard <\/span>Bobby Miller<\/b>, who missed the entire season last year after suffering a torn ACL in his left knee during a practice last October.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLast year I was kind of upset I didn\u2019t get to play my first season. But this year I\u2019m back,\u201d Miller said. I\u2019m ready to go to war with my teammates.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Sharks<\/span><\/strong><\/a> will play four scrimmages at home: Miami Preparatory School on Oct. 31, Pro Holmes Sports Academy on Nov. 21, and Triple Threat Prep on Dec. 12 and Jan. 16 before starting the regular season at the <\/span>Theodore R. Gibson Health Center,<\/span> 11011 S.W. 104th St, versus Academy 22 on Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like we have a lot of young guys but everyone is disciplined enough with their game,\u201d Sandy said. \u201cWe\u2019ve already developed a good team bond so I think we can expect a championship.
