{"id":23950,"date":"2021-01-11T16:18:38","date_gmt":"2021-01-11T21:18:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=23950"},"modified":"2021-04-29T16:34:36","modified_gmt":"2021-04-29T20:34:36","slug":"one-night-in-miami-offers-a-fictionalized-discussion-between-historical-figures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/one-night-in-miami-offers-a-fictionalized-discussion-between-historical-figures\/","title":{"rendered":"Civil Rights Icons Featured In Regina King\u2019s One Night In Miami"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It strikes curiosity in people to know what types of conversations historical figures had in the 1960s. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One Night in Miami <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">offers that vision, with a couple of fictional twists in between.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The film centers around a gathering between notable Black historical figures of the 1960s\u2014Muhammad Ali, a professional boxer; Malcolm X, a civil rights activist; Jim Brown, a fullback for the Cleveland Browns; and Sam Cooke, a soul singer\u2014discussing their roles in the Civil Rights Movement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It takes place on Feb. 25, 1964 before and after Ali<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014who was known as Cassius Clay then\u2014 captured the heavyweight title <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from Sonny Liston in Miami Beach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <i>One Night in Miami <\/i>is\u00a0 Regina King\u2019s directorial debut and premiered at the Venice Film Festival\u2014the first Black female director to have a movie selected for the festival\u2014on Sept. 7, 2020. The film is currently showing at <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/towertheatermiami.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Miami Dade College\u2019s Tower Theater<\/span><\/a><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It features Kingsley Ben-Adir (Malcom X), Eli Goree (Muhammad Ali), Aldis Hodge (Jim Brown) and Leslie Odom Jr. (Sam Cooke).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The plot is straightforward. It takes place mostly at the historic Hampton House. With a lineup of historical giants, it would have been great to see more interactions. However, following historical accuracy and as the title suggests, it is appropriate for the film to show them spending a night together in Miami.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s an excellent screenplay, with each line catered accurately to each character&#8217;s personality, life, and thoughts. It was as if the lines were written by the icons themselves and the actors transformed into the figures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cinematography, in combination with the costume and production design, set the scene for a 1960s based film. The color palette in the film focuses on warm colors\u2014such as yellow, brown, and orange\u2014which were all popular at the time, giving the movie a super 8mm film feel. The outfits worn by the cast and the objects surrounding the setting such as the buildings, cars and furniture make the audience feel as if they are immersed in the era.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A lot of issues were tackled in the film but the racism they experience is a focal point. The characters all experience it in the film, such as not being accepted in someone\u2019s house, being booed on stage or having their house burned down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If there\u2019s a word to describe the film, it would be inspirational. The movie focuses on what it was like being an anti-racism influence during the Jim Crow Era and it\u2019s responsibility and dangers\u2014a major theme presented in the film. All of the characters are memorable in their own way\u2014whether it be through activism, singing, football or boxing\u2014and they are all still remembered and revered to this day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=K8vf_Cmh9nY\">One Night In Miami <\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will be released on Prime Video on Jan. 15.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It strikes curiosity in people to know what types of conversations historical figures had in the 1960s.
