Women in this role are always being chased by the killer and are pretty much voiceless apart from their screams.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24230\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24230\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-24230\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Women-In-Horror-web2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Women-In-Horror-web2.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Women-In-Horror-web2-300x243.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Women-In-Horror-web2-768x623.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24230\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CAROLINA SOTO \/ THE REPORTER<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We see this in Stanley Kubrick\u2019s film adaptation of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Shining<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 1980. The character Wendy Torrance screams constantly about her husband\u2019s descent into madness yet doesn\u2019t show much character development.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem with this kind of film structure is that it reduces female characters down to a singular emotion\u2014scared. Instead of portraying women as the multifaceted beings that they are, some horror films insinuate that women are just living representations of weak emotions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another problem in horror films is how they represent society\u2019s fear of the female anatomy and sexuality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An example is Stephen King\u2019s 1976 classic, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carrie<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where a bullied young girl with telekinetic powers is raised to believe that her period and sex are sinful. Carrie ends up feeling restrained over her own bodily functions and powers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2007 film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teeth<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also has this problem. The plot revolves around a teenage girl who discovers she has teeth in her vagina after she is almost raped. It is based on \u2018vagina dentata,\u2019 a horror folklore created from fear toward women\u2019s unrestrained sexuality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This persistent use of female monsters and the troubling relationship with women\u2019s bodies is the result of the male gaze. It misunderstands and objectifies women by showing that their sexuality and body can be damaging.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By no means am I suggesting we stop enjoying or watching horror classics. The horror genre should be recognized for its approach in not censoring the horrors of violence, its ability to tell <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women\u2019s stories, its diverse range of female characters and its ability to position women as constant survivors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, we must recognize that the genre needs to do a better job of understanding women and portraying female representation. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is most frightening about horror films is not the jump scares, stalkers or psycho-killers\u2014it\u2019s how misogynistic the genres portrayal of women is.
