Two Miami Dade College publications\u2014<\/span>The Reporter<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>Urbana<\/span><\/i>\u2014won top honors at the Florida College System Publications Association virtual conference on Jan. 29.<\/span><\/p>\n

For the tenth year in a row, <\/span>The Reporter<\/span><\/i> was named the top two-year student newspaper in Florida. <\/span>Urbana<\/span><\/i>, the literary magazine at Padro\u0301n Campus, was selected as the top magazine in Division A for the first time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Caf<\/span>\u00e9 Cultura, the literary arts magazine at Hialeah Campus (Division B), and <\/span>AXIS Creative Arts Magazine <\/span><\/i>at North Campus (Division A) won third place honors.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Selections were based on the entries produced during the 2019-20 school year.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Reporter <\/i><\/span>placed in 16 out of 19 categories\u2014including 11 first-place honors<\/span><\/a>\u2014in topics like in-depth reporting, sports, editorial, humor column and design.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI put in a lot of work into the paper and it\u2019s nice to know that it was rewarded,\u201d said Heidi Perez-Moreno, who served as editor-in-chief of <\/span>The Reporter <\/span><\/i>last year and is now a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. \u201cIf breaking news happened, we published it on the same day and that\u2019s something I\u2019m really proud of.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Since its inception in 2010, <\/span>The Reporter<\/span><\/i> has won 149 awards from the FCSPA including 88 first-place honors. The paper covers all eight MDC campuses and had a circulation of 10,250 papers per print cycle before the pandemic. It adapted by implementing a <\/span>newsletter<\/span> <\/span><\/a>that sends biweekly updates directly to students\u2019 inboxes.<\/span><\/p>\n

In October, <\/span>The Reporter<\/i><\/span> was selected as one of nine Pacemaker finalists in the two-year college newspaper category<\/span><\/a> by the Associated Collegiate Press\/College Media Association National College Media Convention.<\/span><\/p>\n

Urbana<\/span><\/i> placed in 12 out of 14 categories, including nine first-place awards in topics such as photography and artwork.<\/span><\/p>\n

Emily Sendin, who serves as <\/span>Urbana\u2019s<\/span><\/i> adviser, praised the magazine for continuing to work through obstacles like the coronavirus pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt shows that they worked hard and were extremely talented because of how the final product came out,\u201d Sendin said. \u201cThere was a synergy created between us that I think is also what made it happen, a very family-like feeling.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Laura Santos-Somohano, <\/span>Urbana<\/span><\/i>\u2019s editor-in-chief for this academic year, echoed Sendin\u2019s feelings.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe would meet until 2-3 a.m. at least twice a week,\u201d Santos-Somohano. \u201cSeeing that get rewarded feels amazing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Last year, the magazine was selected as <\/span>a finalist for the Associated Collegiate Press\u2019 Innovation Pacemaker Award.<\/span><\/a><\/span> They ramped up their social media presence and<\/span> launched the podcast, <\/span>Urbanites.<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n
