The Reporter <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>Caf\u00e9 Cultura<\/span><\/i> did something even the Miami Heat couldn\u2019t<\/span>\u2014they captured first place four years in a row.<\/span><\/p>\n

While Miami Dade College won\u2019t be hoisting the Larry O\u2019Brien Championship Trophy, <\/span>The Reporter<\/span><\/i>\u2014<\/span><\/i>the college-wide newspaper at MDC<\/span>\u2014<\/span>and <\/span>Caf\u00e9 Cultura<\/span><\/i>\u2014<\/span><\/i>the literary magazine at Hialeah Campus<\/span>\u2014<\/span>were selected as the best in the state at the Florida College System Publications Association awards banquet in Boca Raton on Oct 17. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Reporter<\/span><\/i> was selected as the top state college newspaper and <\/span>Caf\u00e9 Cultura<\/span><\/i> won top magazine in Division A.<\/span><\/p>\n

Miambiance<\/span><\/i>, the Kendall Campus magazine, also won top billing in the magazine category in Division B. Axis Magazine, the literary magazine at North Campus, tied for third place in Division B.<\/span><\/p>\n

The competition was based on publications printed during the 2013-14 school year. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cStudents were ecstatic that their work is recognized,\u201d said Ivonne Lamazares, co-adviser of <\/span>Cafe Cultura. <\/span><\/i>\u201cThe students worked extremely hard on this issue. They come after class. We really don\u2019t have a class dedicated to the magazine, so its all on their own time and they put countless hours all year to edit, to design, and to find our photography and to choose it. It just takes countless hours but its fun. They are really passionate about it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Reporter<\/span><\/i> won 11 awards, including seven first-place honors . The paper has won<\/span> 59 awards from the FCSPA in the past four years, including 35 first-place honors. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Individual first-place awards in the newspaper category won by <\/span>The Reporter<\/span><\/i> included: <\/span>Guillermo Herrera<\/b>, Best News Story; <\/span>Gregory Castillo<\/b>, Feature Story; <\/span>Amanda Aracena<\/b>, Sports Writing; <\/span>Aracelia Diez<\/b> and <\/span>Anadaniela Garcia<\/b>, Design; <\/span>Angela Delgado<\/b>, News Photo; <\/span>Irma Gutierrez <\/b>and <\/span>Mark Pulaski<\/b>, Photo Story and<\/span> Kai Sacco<\/b>, Arts Review.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWinning our fourth straight first-place award is really a testament to the blood, sweat, and tears that we, as a whole, pour into this publication,\u201d said Mark Pulaski, the editor-in-chief of <\/span>The Reporter<\/span><\/i>. \u00a0\u201cAs long as we maintain the same level of commitment and desire, I foresee <\/span>The Reporter <\/span><\/i>being on top for years to come.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

First-place awards in the literary magazine category (Division A) included: <\/span>Bianca Rodriguez<\/b>, <\/span>Caf\u00e9 Cultura<\/span><\/i>, Hialeah Campus, in the Editing category and the Fiction category.<\/span><\/p>\n

First-place awards in the literary magazine category (Division B) included: <\/span>Ashley DeLeon<\/b>, <\/span>Bianka Dominguez<\/b>, <\/span>Joseph Quiroz<\/b>, <\/span>Miambiance, <\/span><\/i>Art Works; <\/span>Damarys Alvarez<\/b> and <\/span>Jesse Gonzalez<\/b>, <\/span>Miambiance, <\/span><\/i>Photography; the staff of<\/span> Axis<\/span><\/i>, in the Contents Page category and \u00a0Staff Page category; <\/span>Greg Baker, Dalia St. Louis, Allison Sardinas<\/b>, <\/span>Miambiance, <\/span><\/i>Poetry.<\/span> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
