{"id":2452,"date":"2014-10-28T10:58:09","date_gmt":"2014-10-28T14:58:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=2452"},"modified":"2021-06-07T12:21:26","modified_gmt":"2021-06-07T16:21:26","slug":"wolfson-archives-digitizing-floridas-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wolfson-archives-digitizing-floridas-history\/","title":{"rendered":"Digitizing Florida\u2019s History"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grainy 1980s television footage from Miami television station<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> WTVJ depicts H<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aitian and Cuban immigrants standing in long lines waiting to receive housing and money for food.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was a time when more than 100,000 Haitians and Cubans came to South Florida, mostly in rickety boats, seeking shelter from political turmoil. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digitized TV reports from the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Image Archives <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">located at Wolfson Campus Room <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8406<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> portray the desperation. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preserving these types of television news reports, documentaries and home movies, as well as getting the history of Florida out to the public is the mission of the Archives. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project has more than 35,000 hours of videotape and 23 million feet of film. Nearly half of their collection of historical television news, documentaries and home movies are digitized and available online from the Archives website and on their YouTube channel<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for free.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2456\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2456\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2456\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Archives6-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Archives_two_in\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Archives6-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Archives6-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2456\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Keeping Time: The staff at the Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Images Archives maintains processed film and moving images that are ready to be displayed in a back room where they are easily accessible. ANGELA DELGADO THE REPORTER<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Administrators at the Archives want students, journalists, historians and the general public to watch Florida history<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professors, students, and production companies have all contacted them requesting film from the archives for research, presentations and other projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStudents come and have no idea about what happened in the past,\u201d Archives manager Lou Ellen Kramer said. \u201cSeeing the first generation cell phone was huge in size, shocks many students.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Archives holds public weekly screenings showcasing their holdings. Recently, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a rare kinescope screening of the live July 27, 1961 broadcast of <em>The Plight of Pepito: Cuba\u2019s Lost Generation<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0was viewed by a packed crowd at the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wolfson Campus Auditorium.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lynn Wolfson helped form the Archives<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">broadcast<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">journalist Ralph Renick and historian Arva Moore Parks<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 1984. The project was originally sponsored by Miami Dade College, the Miami-Dade Public Library System and the University of Miami. In 2009, the Wolfson family signed an agreement that transferred the Archives to MDC. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wolfson family donated $9 million to speed up the digitalization of the Archives collection and to build the program\u2019s current office. The Archives are named in honor of Lynn Wolfson, who died in 2012, and her husband, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Louis Wolfson II, who ran the television division of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wometco_Enterprises\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Wometco Enterprises<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A collage of pictures of the original Freedom Tower, Muhammad Ali as a young boxer, Hurricane Andrew\u2019s devastation and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/obama-to-speak-at-north-campus-graduation\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">President Barack Obama<\/span><\/a> visiting Florida decorate the walls of MDC offices, giving a sense of the collection housed there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Television and home movie equipment from the early 1950s are displayed next to the pictures, to get a real view of how people got their entertainment and news in the past.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Machines at the Archives include the Samma Robot that directly takes tapes and converts them to six different digital files. On a recent afternoon, the Samma Robot was processing tapes that showed the undefeated season of the Miami Dolphins in 1972, the only ever undefeated NFL team, through a full season and playoffs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rene Ramos, the Director of the MDC Archives, believes the project holds significant news stories and events, but also shows that people lived strange, complicated lives just like we do today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe started in 2012 and we are half way through,\u201d Ramos said. \u201cIn another 18 to 24 months, we will probably be done and have everything online for more people to see.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To view the search the <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives Media go to their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wolfsonarchives.info\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">online site<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Grainy 1980s television footage from Miami television station WTVJ depicts Haitian and Cuban immigrants standing in long lines waiting to receive housing and money for food.
