Hellen Rivas is not your typical professor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The 25-year-old teaches business at the West and Hialeah campuses but spends her time outside of the classroom rocking out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She is the lead singer for <\/span>El Grupo H<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, a band created in 2004 that includes her parents<\/span>\u2014Helena and Harol\u2014<\/span>and two siblings<\/span>\u2014Harold and <\/span>Heily.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Music to me is my refuge, my channel to communicate every single one of my feelings and to communicate and interact with others,” Hellen said. “It is quite magical.”<\/span><\/p>\n

An Early Shark<\/b><\/p>\n

Born in Cali, Colombia on Dec. 19, 1995, music has always been in her blood. Her father, Harol, played for various bands including Guayac\u00e1n Orquesta, Fruko y Sus Tesos and Grupo Niche, and frequently toured to <\/span>the United States, Europe and South America.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To accommodate Harol\u2019s hectic schedule, the family moved to Miami when Hellen was two.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After graduating from Ernest R. Graham Elementary and Hialeah Gardens Middle School, she sought options to start college early. In the tenth grade, Hellen began homeschooling and joined the dual-enrollment program at Miami Dade College.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She served as vice president of the campus\u2019 Phi Theta Kappa chapter, became managing editor of the literary magazine <\/span>Caf\u00e9 Cultura<\/span><\/i> and a member of the Youth for Environmental Sustainability (YES!) club.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2014, she earned her high school diploma and an associate\u2019s degree in journalism from MDC. Two years later, Hellen earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in broadcast journalism from Florida International University.<\/span><\/p>\n

While attending FIU, Hellen interned for <\/span>Telemundo 51\u2019s entertainment show <\/span><\/a><\/span>Acceso Total<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span> for a semester. She wrote scripts and made graphics for the show and interviewed Dominican singer Prince Royce.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She was then offered a job as an associate producer on Telemundo\u2019s morning newscast, a position she kept until 2017. A year later, Rivas graduated with a master’s degree in business from the University of Miami.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since May of 2019, Hellen has been an adjunct professor at MDC<\/span>\u2014<\/span>she is also co-advisor to the <\/span>Bee Club at Hialeah Campus<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u2014<\/span>and taught TV production to high school students at the Miami Lakes Educational Center & Technical College.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cStudents looked forward to attending class and being part of this course study because of the great discussions in class,\u201d said MDC alumna Marisol Martin, who took Rivas\u2019 principles of business course. \u201cShe helped us learn how to vocalize our thoughts without hesitation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A Talented Child<\/b><\/p>\n

But despite being passionate about teaching, she has dedicated her life to music.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Her performing career launched on Channel 41\u2019s <\/span>A Oscuras Pero Escondidos <\/span><\/i>when she was two. Producers met her during her father\u2019s salsa orchestra presentation and were so impressed, they invited her to perform.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI have always admired her natural talent and her intonation. Her ability to quickly learn and memorize the lyrics of songs is impressive,\u201d said Hellen\u2019s mother, Helena. \u201cWhen she is on stage, she transforms and her performance is enhanced at the sight of large audiences.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hellen kept harnessing her talent. She landed modeling and TV commercial gigs, which opened more doors for her in the entertainment industry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When she was four, Rivas came out with her first album titled <\/span>Como Un Angel<\/span><\/i>. The album\u2014which was sound-engineered by her father\u2014included 10 songs. One of the songs, called <\/span>Gracias Pap\u00e1, Gracias Mam\u00e1<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

<\/i>was\u00a0 written by her mother.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aside from singing, Hellen plays three instruments: violin, saxophone and piano.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSomething I will never forget was Hellen\u2019s first participation in the show <\/span>S\u00e1bado Gigante<\/span><\/i> on Univision when she was four years old,\u201d Harol said. \u201cDon Francisco, the host, asked Hellen which singer she wished to be like when she grew up. Hellen\u2019s response was: \u2018like me!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Musical Family<\/b><\/p>\n

El Grupo H formed when Hellen was nine years old. Her father is the musical director, her mother is the manager, her brother\u2014Harold\u2014is the drummer and her sister\u2014Heily\u2014is the bassist.<\/span><\/p>\n

They perform at weddings, corporate events, <\/span>quincea\u00f1eras using <\/span>pop, rock, country and religious music. The band has been interviewed by America TV, Telemundo, Univision, and MDC TV.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEl Grupo H is feeling the unity of our family and how this manifests itself in our music,\u201d Harold said. \u201cAny band that seeks to make beautiful music must strive for cohesiveness and unity among the members. Being part of the Rivas family makes this part of the band’s success wonderful and simple to accomplish.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The family also owns a music academy\u2014<\/span>Rivas Music & Video<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u2014in Hialeah. They offer music and voice lessons to children and adults.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, they manage a non-profit organization <\/span>Rivas Perdomo Family Foundation<\/a><\/span>. They have completed eight humanitarian missions to Colombia, delivering toys, musical instruments, clothing, and shoes to families in underserved communities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, the family has experienced difficulties of their own\u2014especially while trying to take their music to the next level.<\/span><\/p>\n

They have tried to get airtime on FM radio but it costs from $50,000 to $75,000 to mass-promote a song and convert it into a market hit. Their music can be found on Spotify, iTunes, Google Play, YouTube and Pandora.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During COVID-19, the family has hosted a radio show every Sunday at 5 p.m. through Facebook and Radio Paz 830 AM. They narrate poems and fables, do interviews, and perform live music.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hellen hopes to continue reaching people through music and teaching.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
