{"id":24859,"date":"2021-02-19T17:00:45","date_gmt":"2021-02-19T22:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=24859"},"modified":"2021-04-29T13:49:11","modified_gmt":"2021-04-29T17:49:11","slug":"the-rise-and-fall-of-reality-tv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/the-rise-and-fall-of-reality-tv\/","title":{"rendered":"The Rise And Fall Of Reality TV"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forty-eight years ago, the first reality television show\u2014<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An American Family<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014premiered on the Public Broadcasting Service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The twelve-episode series followed the daily life of the Louds, an upper-middle-class family from Santa Barbara, California. But instead of following what producer\u2019s believed was a \u2018normal family\u2019 it ended up capturing the break up of the family through the separation and divorce of parents Bill and Pat Loud and the struggle of dealing with the fact that one of their sons, Lance, was gay.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The show quickly gained traction, but its sudden rise to fame led to an even faster demise when the show was not renewed for a second season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was not until the early 90\u2019s when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mtv.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">MTV<\/span><\/span><\/a> gave us <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Real World<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that we saw something even close to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An American Family<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Real World<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was about a group of seven strangers in their 20s living in a house together. The show was an unscripted look at what happens when people stop being polite and start getting real. It aired from 1992 to 2019 and was a bona fide hit, driving up the demand for more guilty-pleasure reality shows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the new millennium began we were introduced to shows like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hills, Laguna Beach, The Simple Life<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/keeping-up-with-the-kardashians-coming-to-an-end-after-14-years\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"> Keeping Up with the Kardashians<\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They offered a sneak peek into the lives of socialites doing everyday mundane tasks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also saw new reality series categories emerge: cooking shows such as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hell\u2019s Kitchen<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with Gordon Ramsay and the infamous \u2018idiot sandwich\u2019 scene. More investigative reality shows like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catfish<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> followed the journey of couples who formed online relationships but hadn\u2019t met in person, and others\u2014such as <em>The Bachelor<\/em>, <em>90 Day Fiance<\/em>, <em>Millionaire Matchmaker<\/em> and <em>The Bachelorette<\/em>\u2014followed dating and relationships<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A few celebrities threw their hat in the ring, searching for love, like rapper Flavor Flav in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flavor of Love<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and former Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chad Johnson in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ochocinco: The Ultimate Catch.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu are trying to rescue the reality TV genre from extinction. Some of the shows are refreshing to watch. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bling Empire<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Netflix follows the lives of wealthy Asian and Asian American fun-seekers who go all out with parties, glamour and drama in Los Angeles. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Love is Blind, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">another Netflix show, pairs couples together that have never seen each other hoping emotional connections trump all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the aforementioned shows have done well for the streaming platforms, is it enough to bring reality TV to the good old days? Or are they too far gone?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When reality TV hit its peak in the 2000s, everything that followed just wasn\u2019t good enough. Everything after that seemed too scripted and edited. Naturally, fewer and fewer people kept watching.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What led to much of the success for reality TV in the late \u201990s was not having much to compare it to. No blueprints, no rules, no endgame. However, as more shows started to pop up, TV networks started to realize what worked and what didn\u2019t.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what is the science behind it? Why are we so drawn to these shows? We don\u2019t watch them for the quality content. We sometimes even feel guilty about watching them.
