{"id":25200,"date":"2021-03-16T00:02:38","date_gmt":"2021-03-16T04:02:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=25200"},"modified":"2021-04-29T13:05:49","modified_gmt":"2021-04-29T17:05:49","slug":"one-year-ago-today-mdc-shuttered-its-doors-amid-the-coronavirus-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/one-year-ago-today-mdc-shuttered-its-doors-amid-the-coronavirus-pandemic\/","title":{"rendered":"One Year Ago Today, MDC Shuttered Its Doors Amid The Coronavirus Pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s hard to believe it has been a year since COVID-19 upended our lives.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On March 11, with 118,000 positive cases worldwide, the World Health Organization <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/director-general\/speeches\/detail\/who-director-general-s-opening-remarks-at-the-media-briefing-on-covid-19---11-march-2020\">declared the coronavirus a global pandemic<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following day, the Medical Campus was shut down after a Brazilian official who visited tested positive for the coronavirus. A few hours later, West Campus closed after a student reported being diagnosed with a non-threatening strain of the virus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the end of the day, students from all eight campuses were sent home<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and classes were canceled for two weeks as the College transitioned to remote learning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs soon as I got that message, I immediately went to hunt down masks, hand sanitizer, vitamins, water and toilet paper,\u201d said Medical Campus student Andy Garcia, who got the email announcing the canceling of classes while he was on his way to take an exam.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four days later, on <\/span><b>March 16<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exactly one year ago<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014employees were sent home and the College shuttered its doors at all eight campuses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe way we do things has changed forever,\u201d said Anthony Valenzuela, who serves as president of the Kendall Campus Student Government Association.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_25214\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25214\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-25214\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Yakir-Fernandez-headshot-824x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"559\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Yakir-Fernandez-headshot-824x1024.jpg 824w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Yakir-Fernandez-headshot-241x300.jpg 241w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Yakir-Fernandez-headshot-768x955.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Yakir-Fernandez-headshot-1235x1536.jpg 1235w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Yakir-Fernandez-headshot-1647x2048.jpg 1647w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Yakir-Fernandez-headshot.jpg 1998w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-25214\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Emergency Mode: Yakir Fernandez, Miami Dade College\u2019s Director of Emergency Managemen, has been at the forefront of the school&#8217;s response to the coronavirus pandemic. REPORTER FILE PHOTO\/OMAR NEGRIN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/hurricanes-bomb-threats-and-covid-19-meet-yakir-fernandez-the-man-behind-crisis-management-at-mdc\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Yakir Fernandez<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who serves as Miami Dade College\u2019s Director of Emergency Management, started preparing for the possibility of the College going into lockdown in January. He used the school\u2019s hurricane <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">response as a framework.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In February, the College implemented enhanced cleaning protocols. They chose what chemicals to use and trained custodians on how to properly use them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe only thing I could do was plan for the worst,\u201d Fernandez said. \u201cA lot of healthcare workers didn\u2019t know what this virus was so we had to make decisions for the health and wellbeing of our students.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/mdc-cancels-classes-will-transition-online-to-combat-coronavirus-outbreak\/\">Between March 13-29, the College canceled classes<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">.<\/span> On March 30, students transitioned to online classes with the use of remote learning platforms like Zoom and Blackboard, and communicated with professors mostly via email.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The initial plan was to return to in-person classes in the Summer 2020 semester. However\u2014with the pandemic still going strong\u2014the College only allowed a small number of students to take in-person instruction for classes that couldn\u2019t be replicated virtually.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students taking blended courses <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/miami-dade-college-will-return-to-campus-effective-sept-28\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">returned to in-person classes on Sept. 28 on a limited basis<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">.<\/span> People entering the campuses must go through temperature checkpoints and are required to wear a face mask at all times. Social distancing is practiced inside classrooms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>In-Person Programs<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The School of Entertainment &amp; Design Technology was one of the few programs that remained in-person during the summer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Equipment that is checked out now includes digital thermometers and disinfectant wipes and everything must be sanitized after each use. In addition, course syllabi now include an addendum that outlines the industry-standard protocols that must be followed while on set.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFilm and television production are very social-oriented types of activities,\u201d said SEDT Chairperson Barry Gordon. \u201cAll faculty and staff <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are very proud of the fact that students have been able to continue progressing toward completing their degree programs without stepping out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To accommodate students working in smaller cohorts, more equipment has been added to SEDT\u2019s inventory.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students also missed out on their annual film screening where they showcase the work they do throughout the year. It has since become a virtual showcase.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Domenicca Botero, a SEDT student majoring in film and digital production, has struggled to complete her thesis project. She says that part of her project\u2019s budget had to be allocated to materials strictly used for sanitation and safety, schedules could not overlap because of cohort size restrictions, and portions of the script had to be rewritten to better fit current circumstances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe process of filmmaking during this time was very stressful and uncertain,\u201d Botero said. \u201cIt was a period of adaptability and necessity [that] made us think more creatively.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The School of Justice\u2014another program that remained in person\u2014allowed for social distancing by using the conference center in building 9 at North Campus as a classroom. Only 36 students are allowed in the center at a time, so classes are split into two sessions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s difficult to be in a classroom and trying to split your time as a professor to make sure those in front of you are actually being engaged as well as those who are online,\u201d said criminal justice professor Nancy Alleyne.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/this-is-how-mdcs-fashion-institute-has-tackled-the-coronavirus\/\">Miami Fashion Institute at MDC<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has also reduced machinery access to students. The institute has taken away the use of the Fashion Lab\u2014a workspace with worktables, mannequins, dress forms, and machinery\u2014during class time. Students must schedule an appointment in advance to complete their classwork because many don\u2019t have the necessary equipment at home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medical Campus reopened its doors on June 1 to teach health science programs face-to-face. Classrooms are sanitized in between sessions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The campus has also made an effort to help the community during the pandemic. Last April, they <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/mdc-loans-17-ventilators-to-jackson-memorial-hospital-to-fight-the-coronavirus\/\"><b><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">loaned 17 ventilators to Jackson Memorial Hospital<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">. <\/span><\/b><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They also discussed the possibility of having students and faculty in the medical assistant, physician assistant and nursing programs help administer the COVID-19 vaccines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen we go through a hurricane, it doesn\u2019t impact the country [but] this pandemic has affected everyone,\u201d said campus President Bryan Stewart, who said he was forced to quarantine for two weeks after the Medical Campus was exposed to someone with COVID-19 back in March. \u201cThe realization that we will remain in history long after we are gone has been eye-opening.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_25213\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25213\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-25213\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Michael-Cruz-5-2-825x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"559\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Michael-Cruz-5-2-825x1024.jpg 825w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Michael-Cruz-5-2-242x300.jpg 242w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Michael-Cruz-5-2-768x954.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Michael-Cruz-5-2-1237x1536.jpg 1237w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Michael-Cruz-5-2.jpg 1649w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-25213\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Struggling To Adapt: North Campus Student Government Association President Michael Cruz says that the coronavirus pandemic has adversely affected the amount of participation in his organization. REPORTER FILE PHOTO\/GABRILLE TORNA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Students Impacted <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student organizations have also struggled to adapt to the pandemic.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Student Government Association at North Campus had more than 115 members before the pandemic, making it the second most active branch at the College. However, the pandemic has hampered participation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy biggest challenge has been getting people to come to the table,\u201d said North Campus SGA President Michael Cruz. \u201cBefore the pandemic, we always had people in the SGA office, in the recreational room playing video games or in the cafeteria. There were people socializing but the pandemic has completely killed us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collegewide, the organization has tried to weather the storm by hosting food and mask distributions, virtual mental health discussions, webinars about racial injustice, drive-in movie theater events and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStudents are going through one of the hardest times,\u201d Valenzuela said. \u201cWhether that is the loss of jobs, family members, mental health issues or the confusion this pandemic has presented to all of us.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students at <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Reporter<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have also dealt with the consequences of the coronavirus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On March 10, a small group of staff members boarded a plane to attend the ACP\/CMA Spring National College Media Convention in New York City. Minutes before takeoff, the College informed them the pandemic was spreading quickly and they no longer had permission to travel. Their luggage made it to New York but they never did.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, a few days later, the staff realized how serious things were when they learned that some conference attendees reported testing positive for the coronavirus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back home, the paper had to stop printing physical copies\u2014which are distributed across the campuses\u2014that March. For the first few months, photographers could not take photos and interviews moved almost entirely virtually or on the phone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The staff now holds gatherings using Google Meet and news is delivered through a bi-weekly <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.us19.list-manage.com\/subscribe?u=4fc6146412415baee32007fd7&amp;id=b5cd3712dc\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">newsletter<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">,<\/span> the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reporter <\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">website<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and social media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Athletics also faced challenges. The baseball and softball teams had their seasons cut short last year because of COVID-19. Recruiting for all teams this summer was done virtually and no one was allowed to practice until September.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teams returned to action this spring but fans were not allowed in the stands at MDC home games until a few weeks ago.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Looking Forward<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Madeline Pumariega, who started as president of MDC in January, has made it a point to provide students and staff with the resources they need to get through the pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Jan. 20, <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/north-and-kendall-campus-to-serve-as-covid-19-testing-sites\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">the North and Kendall campuses became testing sites for the coronavirus<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> thanks to an agreement with Curative, an organization that provides tests to produce data for health officials. The Homestead Campus followed suit on March 10.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The College also worked out a deal that makes it possible for its <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/mdc-employees-who-are-65-and-older-to-be-vaccinated-by-jackson-health-system\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">employees who are 65 and older to get the COVID-19 vaccine<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through the Jackson Memorial Health System. And on March 3, North Campus became <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/north-campus-to-serve-as-countys-first-federal-covid-19-vaccination-site\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">the first federal vaccination site in South Florida<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">,<\/span> giving 5,000 vaccinations per day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pandemic caused a steep decrease in enrollment at MDC, with the school reporting <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/one-day-before-the-fall-semester-starts-enrollment-is-down-16-percent-at-mdc\/\">a 16 percent decline at the start of the Fall 2020 semester<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">.<\/span> The College has slowly made its way back\u2014enrollment for the spring semester was down by only 6.5 percent on March 8.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To make classes more engaging, the College launched a new teaching modality\u2014MDC Live\u2014that offers synchronous virtual classes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTo move onto Phase 3, data and science is what will determine it,\u201d Pumeriega said. \u201cListening to students and our faculty is also important as we put plans for the fall term and implement additional learning support to help them be successful.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This summer, MDC will remain in Phase 2.
