Summer is in full sweat. But fear not, you can beat the heat by spending some time<\/span>\u2014and dollars\u2014at the theater catching some of the interesting cinematic selections hitting theaters this summer. <\/span><\/p>\n

So far this summer, there have been some solid blockbuster hits (<\/span>Edge of Tomorrow<\/span><\/i>), some flops (<\/span>A Million Ways To Die In The West<\/span><\/i>), an amazing indie gem (<\/span>Locke<\/span><\/i>) and some that walk the line (<\/span>Godzilla<\/span><\/i>).<\/span><\/p>\n

For the rest of the summer, I\u2019m not focusing on the popcorn-peddling, big-budget behemoths loaded with CGI such as the lame-looking <\/span>Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles <\/span><\/i>reboot, the who-knows-what-number they\u2019re on <\/span>Transformers<\/span><\/i>, or the Marvel factories latest rollout <\/span>Guardians of the Galaxy<\/span><\/i>, but instead I\u2019m focusing on some films that actually might have some substance beneath their flashy exteriors. <\/span><\/p>\n

Here are my top six picks for the cinematic summer of 2014, listed in order of release date.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Rover<\/span><\/i><\/h1>\n

Directed by <\/span>David Mich\u00f4d<\/span><\/p>\n

Written by David Mich\u00f4d and Joel Edgerton<\/span><\/p>\n

Starring <\/span>Guy Pearce<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Robert Pattinson<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Scoot McNairy<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

In theaters June 20<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m a sucker for dystopian crime dramas like <\/span>David Mich\u00f4d\u2019s <\/span>The Rover, <\/span><\/i>which is set in the near future after a global economic collapse. Premiering in Cannes, this flick has gathered quite a bit of positive press so far, and may be just what co-star Robert Pattinson needs to break out of the <\/span>Twilight<\/span><\/i> chains. <\/span><\/p>\n

Jersey Boys<\/span><\/i><\/h1>\n

Directed by Clint Eastwood<\/span><\/p>\n

Written by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice<\/span><\/p>\n

Starring <\/span>John Lloyd Young, Erich Bergen, and Michael Lomenda<\/span><\/p>\n

In theaters June 20<\/span><\/p>\n

Clint Eastwood has proven to be not only a talent in front of the camera, but a powerhouse behind it as well with such films as <\/span>Mystic River, Gran Torino, <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>Million Dollar Baby. <\/span><\/i>I\u2019m interested to see what he does here with <\/span>Jersey Boys<\/span><\/i>, the musical drama biopic about Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons.<\/span><\/p>\n

Boyhood <\/span><\/i><\/h1>\n

Written and directed by Richard Linklater<\/span><\/p>\n

Starring <\/span>Patricia Arquette, Ellar Coltrane, and Ethan Hawke<\/span><\/p>\n

In theaters July 11<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the most interesting feats of filmmaking in recent memory, <\/span>Boyhood <\/span><\/i>was shot intermittently over the course of 12 years. This latest film from Richard Linklater has gotten some serious attention since debuting at Sundance earlier this year. <\/span><\/p>\n

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes <\/span><\/i><\/h1>\n

Directed by Matt Reeves<\/span><\/p>\n

Written by Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, and Mark Bomback<\/span><\/p>\n

Starring <\/span>Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, and Andy Serkis<\/span><\/p>\n

In theaters July 11<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite a distaste for the aforementioned CGI blockbusters, <\/span>Dawn of the Planet of the Apes <\/span><\/i>looks bananas! Having been in the works since 2011\u2019s <\/span>Rise of the Planet of the Apes<\/span><\/i>, which was very good itself, it\u2019s clear that they\u2019re not monkeying around with this sequel. <\/span><\/p>\n

A Most Wanted Man<\/span><\/i><\/h1>\n

Directed by Anton Corbijn<\/span><\/p>\n

Written by <\/span>Andrew Bovell<\/span><\/a> (screenplay), <\/span>John le Carr\u00e9<\/span><\/a> (novel)<\/span><\/p>\n

Starring <\/span>Rachel McAdams<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Robin Wright<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Philip Seymour Hoffman<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

In theaters July 25<\/span><\/p>\n

In one of his final roles, the late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman stars as a hard-drinking counter terror expert. It should be interesting to see Hoffman<\/span>\u2014<\/span>who was always a potent presence on screen<\/span>\u2014<\/span>depicting a character who, like himself, also had a strong vice and some presumed deep emotional turmoil. <\/span><\/p>\n

Sin City: A Dame To Kill For<\/span><\/i><\/h1>\n

Directed by Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez<\/span><\/p>\n

Written by Frank Miller<\/span><\/p>\n

Starring <\/span>Jessica Alba, Mickey Rourke, Rosario Dawson<\/span><\/p>\n

In theaters August 22<\/span><\/p>\n

This heavily stylized neo-noir is both a sequel and a prequel, which weaves in and out of the story of 2005\u2019s <\/span>Sin City.<\/span><\/i> Once again directed by Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez, <\/span>A Dame To Kill For<\/span><\/i> brings back many of the same citizens of sin, and introduces many new characters played by familiar actors such as Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Josh Brolin.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
