{"id":25675,"date":"2021-03-23T15:10:04","date_gmt":"2021-03-23T19:10:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=25675"},"modified":"2021-04-29T12:52:54","modified_gmt":"2021-04-29T16:52:54","slug":"the-body-electric-exhibit-showcases-our-evolving-relationship-with-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/the-body-electric-exhibit-showcases-our-evolving-relationship-with-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"The Body Electric Exhibit Showcases Our Evolving Relationship With Technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miami Dade College\u2019s Freedom Tower, 600 Biscayne Blvd., is presenting <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Body Electric<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> exhibition through May 30.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The multidisciplinary showcase, which opened on Nov. 5, examines humans&#8217; ever-changing relationship with technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It features 91 works by 59 artists and collectives who use the screen as a place to rethink the body and identity, with an emphasis on subjects of race, class, gender and sexuality. It also exemplifies how since the 1960s the interactions between us and our screens has become more challenging.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis exhibition could not be more relevant,\u201d said Rina Carvajal, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MOAD\u2019s executive director and chief curato<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">r. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Especially during the last year, we\u2019ve all spent more time on screens, with devices and dependent on technology than ever before.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Body Electric<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was made possible by support from the Carl &amp; Marilynn Thoma Art Foundation and was first displayed at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the art showcased in the exhibit include Rafael Lozano-Hemmer\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surface Tension<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a work he originally made in 1992.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It features a giant video eye, controlled by motion sensors and software, that follows visitors wherever they move in the room. It makes you feel like you are under surveillance and embodies the idea that Big Brother is watching you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hito Steyerl\u2019s video installation, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Not to Be Seen: A F*cking Didactic Educational<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a .MOV File that is an absurdist take on technocratic intrusions into our lives. It uses a blend of fact and fiction, live action and animation, to make the artist a symbol for avoiding being visible under a state of surveillance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zach Blas\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Icosahedron<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an artificially intelligent crystal ball that predicts the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other featured artists include creatives that were active in the mid-1960s\u2014Jaime Davidovich, Shigeko Kubota, Marta Minuj\u00edn, Charlotte Moorman, Nam June Paik and Wolf Vostell\u2014who used television as the subject and object of their work that included performance, sculpture and the moving image.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also highlighted in the exhibit are work by Jes Fan, Josh Kline, Carolyn Lazard, Candice Lin &amp; Patrick Staff and Marianna Simnett that examine the malleability of the body. They deal with themes of surgical intervention, care, and chemical and biological processes unnoticeable to the eye.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI want students to come away with a sense of how and why artists are at the forefront of addressing many of the crucial matters that face us today,\u201d Carvajal said. \u201cThe imaginative and creative thinking about real-life issues demonstrated by the artists in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Body Electric <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can serve as a model for innovative strategies in many fields.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Body Electric<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exhibit is free for students with an MDC ID.
