{"id":26133,"date":"2021-04-21T14:51:31","date_gmt":"2021-04-21T18:51:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=26133"},"modified":"2021-04-29T12:06:43","modified_gmt":"2021-04-29T16:06:43","slug":"rosewater-kicks-off-live-arts-miamis-ecocultura-series-on-april-23-and-24","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/rosewater-kicks-off-live-arts-miamis-ecocultura-series-on-april-23-and-24\/","title":{"rendered":"RoseWater Kicks Off Live Arts Miami\u2019s ECOCultura Series On April 23 And 24"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Live Arts Miami is kicking off their <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ECOCultura<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> series with two performances of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RoseWater, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a dance ritual by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdc.edu\/kendall\/academic-departments\/performing-arts-and-industries\/bio-michelle-grant-murray.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Miami Dade College professor Michelle Grant-Murray<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that celebrates ancestral knowledge and practice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The in-person performances <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will take place at Pinecrest Gardens,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11000 S.W. 57th Ave., on April 23 and 24 at 7:30 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grant-Murray got the idea for the show from a childhood memory of her grandmother who bathed her in rosewater. She recalled how the ritual comforted her.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the pandemic, Grant-Murray craved that security and made some rosewater for herself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn the beginning of quarantine [my grandmother\u2019s] memory hit me hard,\u201d Grant-Murray said. \u201cI\u2019d think to myself how was she able to sustain her family through life\u2019s daily process, what does it mean to be protected, how do you exist in something to get to the other side and ultimately, what were we doing to sustain during a world-wide pandemic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The venue where the performance is being held is allowing a limited capacity of 130 guests. Attendees must follow CDC protocols like wearing a face mask and staying six-feet apart. The event will be followed by a 10-minute Q&amp;A.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s my hope for people to walk out of this performance with an understanding that environmental racism is the leading cause to why we are in the situation we are in,\u201d Grant-Murray said. \u201cWe have work to do as a community, we must come together to create a better humanity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the performance, guests will get a sample of Grant-Murray\u2019s rosewater that was made at the Kendall Campus Environmental Center.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the future, Grant-Murray hopes to tour <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RoseWater <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">annually in different communities around Miami.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RoseWater<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> allows us to consider new perspectives and ways of thinking about the multiple intersecting crisis we face,\u201d said Live Arts Miami Executive Director Kathryn Garcia. \u201cWe want every one of these works to plant a seed to open people\u2019s hearts, minds and spirits to take action to create more sustainable futures.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ECOCultura<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was launched in 2019. The initial series brought together six Miami-based artists who shared a passion for climate justice to develop works using theater, dynamic dance and music centered on climate change and sustainability in Miami.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year\u2019s artists include Grant-Murray, Dale Andree, Sandra Portal-Andreu, Fereshteh Toosi, Susan Caraballo, and Hattie Mae Williams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tickets for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RoseWater <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are sold out, but you can click <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/liveartsmiami.org\/events\/rosewater\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">here<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be added to the waitlist. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Live Arts Miami is kicking off their ECOCultura series with two performances of RoseWater, a dance ritual by Miami Dade College professor Michelle Grant-Murray that celebrates ancestral knowledge and practice.
