On March 2, Dr. Seuss Enterprises <\/span>announced<\/span><\/span><\/a> that six books from the famous children\u2019s series would no longer be published because they included racist and insensitive imagery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The books are: <\/span>And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, If I Ran the Zoo, McElligot\u2019s Pool, On Beyond Zebra!, Scrambled Eggs Super! <\/span><\/i>and<\/span> The Cat\u2019s Quizzer.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cThese books portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong,\u201d the statement said.<\/span><\/p>\n

When I first heard the news, I thought: \u201chow can something so innocent be recognized as offensive?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

I was wrong. The books are littered with insensitive and hurtful material.<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, an Asian character in <\/span>And to Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street<\/span><\/i>\u2014published in 1937\u2014was drawn with slanted lines for eyes and was wearing a pointed hat carrying chopsticks and a bowl of rice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The imagery In <\/span>If I Ran the Zoo<\/span><\/i> showcases White Supremacy. Three Asian characters in the book carry white males, toting guns, on their heads to illustrate dominance. Furthermore, the book featured an Arab chieftain riding a camel and African characters resemble monkeys.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because Dr. Seuss\u2019s books are viewed as an American symbol of childhood, the majority of people have a nostalgic connection to his work and they are surprised to recognize the prejudice.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Seuss has been publishing books since the early 1900s, with more than<\/span> 650 million copies sold globally<\/span><\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Books such as <\/span>The Cat in The Hat, The Lorax, Green Eggs and Ham, <\/span><\/i>and<\/span> Oh, The Places You\u2019ll Go!<\/span><\/i> were staples of my childhood. I remember my elementary school dedicating a whole week to Dr. Seuss\u2019s books. We dressed up as the characters and the librarian read us his most famous works.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As a child, I even had a phase where I begged my dad to buy me a Dr. Seuss book every time I saw one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some have excused Dr. Seuss\u2019s racism by claiming it was a result of the time period he lived in, implying that he didn’t know better or didn’t realize how racist his books were.<\/span><\/p>\n

Historian Richard Minear, author of <\/span>Dr. Seuss Goes to War,<\/span><\/i> told <\/span>VOA News<\/span><\/span><\/a> we should take it as a \u201cteaching moment, rather than cancel culture.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

P<\/span>hilip Nel, a children\u2019s literature scholar and English professor at Kansas State University agrees. He thinks Dr. Seuss should continue to be celebrated as an artist and poet and that it\u2019s a healthy relationship to have with art.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, many aren\u2019t accepting this explanation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Karen Ishizuka, chief curator at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, told <\/span>NBC News<\/span><\/span><\/a>, \u201cthe long-standing prevalence of racist Asian imagery within the larger widespread anti-Asian sentiment in the U.S. added to the delayed response to Dr. Seuss\u2019 racism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A <\/span>2019 survey<\/span><\/span><\/a>, found that only about 2% of Dr. Seuss’s characters were people of color.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Removing the books that portray racist imagery off the shelves is the right thing to do. But I don\u2019t believe Dr. Seus should be canceled. The books that I grew up reading are timeless classics that should continue to be celebrated and read by children.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, it\u2019s crucial that we call out negative examples of racial representation, regardless of fame and rank.<\/span><\/p>\n

So no, Dr. Seuss is not being canceled. What\u2019s actually happening is that our world is evolving.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You can acknowledge the time period of a piece of work without excusing racism because being racist is never okay no matter the time period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Thankfully we now also have plenty of diverse and unproblematic children\u2019s books to choose from, instead of reading racist Dr. Seuss books.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
