Three Asian characters in the book carry white males, toting guns, on their heads to illustrate dominance. Furthermore, the book featured an Arab chieftain riding a camel and African characters resemble monkeys.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because Dr. Seuss\u2019s books are viewed as an American symbol of childhood, the majority of people have a nostalgic connection to his work and they are surprised to recognize the prejudice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Seuss has been publishing books since the early 1900s, with more than<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/usa\/all-about-america\/it-time-cancel-dr-seuss-due-racist-imagery\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"> 650 million copies sold globally<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Books such as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cat in The Hat, The Lorax, Green Eggs and Ham, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Oh, The Places You\u2019ll Go!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were staples of my childhood. I remember my elementary school dedicating a whole week to Dr. Seuss\u2019s books. We dressed up as the characters and the librarian read us his most famous works.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a child, I even had a phase where I begged my dad to buy me a Dr. Seuss book every time I saw one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some have excused Dr. Seuss\u2019s racism by claiming it was a result of the time period he lived in, implying that he didn&#8217;t know better or didn&#8217;t realize how racist his books were.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Historian Richard Minear, author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Seuss Goes to War,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/usa\/all-about-america\/it-time-cancel-dr-seuss-due-racist-imagery\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">VOA News<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> we should take it as a \u201cteaching moment, rather than cancel culture.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">P<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hilip Nel, a children\u2019s literature scholar and English professor at Kansas State University agrees. He thinks Dr. Seuss should continue to be celebrated as an artist and poet and that it\u2019s a healthy relationship to have with art.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, many aren\u2019t accepting this explanation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karen Ishizuka, chief curator at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/asian-america\/dr-seuss-got-away-anti-asian-racism-long-rcna381\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">NBC News<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cthe long-standing prevalence of racist Asian imagery within the larger widespread anti-Asian sentiment in the U.S. added to the delayed response to Dr. Seuss\u2019 racism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sophia.stkate.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1050&amp;context=rdyl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">2019 survey<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, found that only about 2% of Dr. Seuss&#8217;s characters were people of color.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Removing the books that portray racist imagery off the shelves is the right thing to do. But I don\u2019t believe Dr. Seus should be canceled. The books that I grew up reading are timeless classics that should continue to be celebrated and read by children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it\u2019s crucial that we call out negative examples of racial representation, regardless of fame and rank.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So no, Dr. Seuss is not being canceled.
