On April 20, the prosecution gave their closing arguments against Derek Chauvin, the man who murdered George Floyd.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The trial has been one of the most influential cases we\u2019ve seen in the past 50 years and although Chauvin was found guilty on all charges<\/span><\/a>, this isn\u2019t the end.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ever since we landed on Plymouth Rock, there\u2019s been a tipped scale in our nation\u2019s system.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s no debate that Derek Chauvin\u2019s use of force was excessive and beyond the realm of reason for any officer. His actions alone killed George Floyd.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, his death goes beyond this horrific incident. It\u2019s the continued revelation of the oppression Black people have endured throughout history and the need for accountability in our police force.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To be clear, the police are not above the law and they are not the law either. They exist to serve and protect citizens.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even though no human is perfect and we can\u2019t expect them to be Gods, there needs to be a higher standard for those who wear the blue uniform. For not everyone deserves to wear it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Many police officers have acted as judge, jury and executioner even though that is not their responsibility. They\u2019re supposed to act as a medium to protect and enforce the law, not punish those who infringe upon it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s up to the courts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So whenever I see anyone being treated violently by a police officer, it angers me and it should anger you too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Police officers have gotten away with such actions for far too long.<\/span><\/p>\n

Derek Chauvin is one of those cops that do whatever they want and gets away with it. So when his verdict told a story many of us already knew, he was surprised to see he actually had to pay the price for his actions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now instead of the status quo\u2014simply firing the police officer for his misconduct\u2014he faces decades in prison.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s crucial for George Floyd\u2019s story to not be forgotten and to continuously hold police officers accountable for what they do; as opposed to letting the lives of Black people become collateral damage.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although nothing will bring George Floyd<\/span><\/a> back to life, hopefully, Derek Chauvin\u2019s verdict will serve as a reminder of the justice that is needed in America.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
