{"id":26821,"date":"2021-05-18T18:45:41","date_gmt":"2021-05-18T22:45:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=26821"},"modified":"2021-05-19T05:19:05","modified_gmt":"2021-05-19T09:19:05","slug":"four-honors-college-graduates-win-prestigious-jack-kent-cooke-transfer-scholarship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/four-honors-college-graduates-win-prestigious-jack-kent-cooke-transfer-scholarship\/","title":{"rendered":"Four Honors College Graduates Win Prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Transfer Scholarship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four recent Miami Dade College graduates<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Laura Santos-Somohano<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span>Estefano Reyes<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span>Diana Gonzalez<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Kalid Gawon<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were awarded the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The recipients, all Honors College alums, will receive up to $40,000 annually for living expenses, tuition, books and additional fees at their transfer schools.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey couldn\u2019t be more deserving of this prestigious award,\u201d said Honors College Dean Eric Hoffman. \u201cWe couldn&#8217;t be more excited for their future.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eligible students had to be sophomores or recent graduates of a two-year institution in the United States, have a GPA of at least 3.5 and demonstrate unmet financial need. They must plan to enroll full-time in a baccalaureate program during the fall and have no previous enrollment at a four-year institution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 1,300 applied for the scholarship this year and <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jkcf.org\/our-stories\/2021-undergraduate-transfer-scholars\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">72 winners<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were selected nationwide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Laura Santos-Somohano<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26805\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26805\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-26805\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Laura-Santos-5_web.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Laura-Santos-5_web.jpg 667w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Laura-Santos-5_web-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26805\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">SANTOS-SOMOHANO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laura Santos-Somohano lost her mother, Odalys Somohano, to cancer in Honduras when she was six. Laura and her father, Juan Santos, moved to Spain after Odalys died.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Santos-Somohano was 12, they moved to Miami in 2014 to secure a better future. In 2017, Juan was diagnosed with cancer; he passed away shortly after.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But four years later, Laura secured the future her dad dreamt of. She won a full scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI didn\u2019t expect to win [the Jack Kent Cooke scholarship] because I\u2019m not a STEM student, that&#8217;s why I was surprised,\u201d Santos-Somohan said. \u201cMy statement [showed] that I have something to say, especially for people who are like me and for people who cannot speak.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She graduated from the Eduardo J. Padr\u00f3n Campus in May with an associate\u2019s degree in political science. At the campus, Santos-Somohano was editor-in-chief of the literary magazine <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urbana<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 19-year-old also served as president of Hermione\u2019s Army\u2014a chapter of the Harry Potter Alliance that teaches storytelling, equality and literacy\u2014a senator for the Student Government Association and a member of Phi Theta Kappa, Phi Beta Lambda and Beta Beta Beta.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This summer, she will study Turkish as part of the <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/clscholarship.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Critical Language Scholarship Program<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The program will be virtual but she will meet with professors in Turkey everyday and have conversations with her host family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Estefano Reyes<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26806\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26806\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-26806\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Estefano-Reyes-3_web.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Estefano-Reyes-3_web.jpg 667w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Estefano-Reyes-3_web-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26806\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">REYES<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Estefano Reyes, 23, grew up in Venezuela seeing his mother, Tailuma Madriz, suffer from Guillain-Barr\u00e9 syndrome, a rare disorder in which the immune system attacks the nerves. He recalls seeing her struggle to walk and undergo several surgeries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those experiences gave him the belief that computer science can create artificial intelligence to help health professionals eradicate illnesses, ranging from COVID-19 to cancer. This fall, he will attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to complete his bachelor\u2019s in computer science.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs a child, I would hover around the MIT website and I always saw studying there as a dream, not a possibility,\u201d Reyes said. \u201cRelying on the JKC scholarship money and foundation for counseling is just magnificent.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reyes graduated from Padr\u00f3n Campus with an associate\u2019s degree in computer science this May. During his time at MDC, he served as president of Sigma Zeta. He was also secretary of Phi Beta Lambda, a Student Government Association senator and a member of Beta Beta Beta and Phi Theta Kappa.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This summer, <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/honors-college-student-selected-as-station1-frontiers-fellow\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he will participate in a ten-week Station1 Frontiers Fellowship<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where he will work on a research project alongside MIT professors and technology startup Deliberate AI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Diana Gonzalez<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26808\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26808\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-26808\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Diana-Gonzalez-2-crop_web.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"615\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Diana-Gonzalez-2-crop_web.jpg 650w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Diana-Gonzalez-2-crop_web-195x300.jpg 195w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26808\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">GONZALEZ<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drawing was always a big part of Diana Gonzalez\u2019s life. But when her mother, Dulnia Jimenez, was diagnosed with cancer she dedicated more time to the art form to cope with her feelings.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gonzalez, whose mother is a cancer survivor, illustrated dead nature and realistic portraits of women. Now she plans to become a psychologist to help people understand their feelings and overcome their past through art.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLooking back, I never imagined I\u2019d achieve so many things toward my psychology and art passion,\u201d Gonzalez said. \u201cThis shows that all the perseverance and nights without sleep have paid off.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This May, she earned her associate\u2019s degree in psychology from North Campus. She has yet to commit to a university but is considering Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, Clark University in Massachusetts and Dayton College in Ohio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At MDC, Gonzalez served as president of the National Alliance on Mental Illness Club. She was also the treasurer of the physician assistant and nursing club and a member of the minority association of pre-health students, Doctors Without Borders and the Pride Unity Club.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gonzalez, 20, was also involved in the New School Life Program by tutoring elementary kids in math and reading for two months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Kalid Gawon<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26807\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26807\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-26807\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Kalid-Gawon-1-crop_web.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"579\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Kalid-Gawon-1-crop_web.jpg 691w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Kalid-Gawon-1-crop_web-207x300.jpg 207w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26807\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">GAWON<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kalid Gawon, 18, grew up struggling with food insecurity and not having enough money to make ends meet. He and his five siblings were raised by their mother\u2014Bilky Raji.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being the oldest motivated him to strive for success to help his family. Someday, he hopes to create a nonprofit organization that assists single moms financially and provides them food.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhenever I\u2019m going through a low moment in my life, [my family is] my rock,\u201d Gawon said. \u201cI\u2019m a minority and grew up around minorities, so I just want to help people in my community the best way I can.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gawon graduated from North Campus in May with an associate\u2019s degree in political science. He has been accepted into the University of Miami, Florida International University Honors Program and Claremont McKenna College in California.
