Rising sophomore Ammy Elizabeth Sanchez Suasti has been selected as editor-in-chief of <\/span>The Reporter<\/span><\/i> for the 2021-22 school year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sanchez, <\/span>a mass communications\/journalism major in <\/span>The Honors College<\/span><\/a><\/span> at North Campus, <\/span>has served as the paper\u2019s forum editor<\/span><\/a><\/span> since the spring. She will officially start <\/span>her new role on August 2.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She will replace Adriana Dos Santos, who is transferring to the University of Florida this fall to study public relations.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI leave with the reassurance that someone great will be taking over our newspaper,\u201d said Dos Santos, who will continue as the paper\u2019s editor through the summer. \u201cI am confident that she will lead our staff successfully and can\u2019t wait to see what she has in store.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Sanchez plans to work on a commitment contract that would expound on the paper\u2019s ethical code and staff writers responsibilities. She also wants to expand the paper\u2019s social media footprint by creating a TikTok account, reactivating the paper\u2019s Facebook page and doing IGTV videos.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The 18-year-old <\/span>was born in Goi\u00e2nia, Brazil, in 2003. When she was nine, she moved to Miami. Sanchez has also lived in Guayaquil, Ecuador.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMoving so often to countries with very different cultures humbled me,\u201d Sanchez said. \u201cIt opened my eyes to the different ways one is able to communicate with others and how it should be done.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She joined the paper in September after graduating from Hialeah Gardens Senior High School in 2020. Sanchez has written for the news, forum and briefing sections of the paper.<\/span><\/p>\n

During her time at the paper, Sanchez has written stories about <\/span>graduation<\/span><\/span><\/a>, a professor at the Miami Fashion Institute\u2014<\/span>Julian Asion<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u2014who previously worked with Calvin Klein, and about <\/span>constructions and renovations<\/span><\/a><\/span> happening at North Campus.<\/span><\/p>\n

When Sanchez first enrolled at North Campus, she was a business major who aspired to work in human resources at a bank. But after joining the paper, she tapped into her talent as a communicator.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf someone would\u2019ve told me that I\u2019d be leading a student newspaper when I first started at Miami Dade College, I wouldn\u2019t have believed them,\u201d Sanchez said. \u201cI\u2019m thankful and excited to take on this journey while working alongside talented people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
